New Meetup: Snowshoeing

Announcing a new Meetup for Internationals in Wien!

What: Snowshoeing
When: Saturday, March 23,[masked]:45 AM

Where: Bahnhof Meidling
Eichenstrasse 100

Hi folks,

Finally the promissed snowshoeing trip to Rax comes. Yuppi!!!

We will get there by train, leaving from Meidling at 8am and arriving to
Payerbach at ~9:30; from there we take a bus that leaves ~12 min later
and arrives to Rax Seilbahn lift base station. We start walking (~1 km) to the Ottohaus hütte, where we will make a short stop before continuing our walk.

The main hiking path and nice scenery starts from the Ottohaus
hut. There is an option to take a lift for 12 euros (one way) or 20 eur (return ticket) per person to get there. I will not take the lift but walk, but the option is open for people who want to take it easy.

Info on the snowshoes rental: if you are one of the regular members of the running club, or we have met you before in any of our activities, please contact Tadas. There is a security deposit involved, so we only can offer the rental through us to members that we already know.

If we have not met you before, you are still wlecome to come. Please check the big sport stores for snowshoes rental. Some of the hikking clubs in Vienna offer them to members as well. There is also a chance to rent snowshoes at Ottohaus (best choice if yu are taking the liff).

Transportation: We plan to buy a group w-end ticket valid for up to 5 people. The final price for a return ticket by train (bus excluded) comes around $8 if we are 5.

Here is the map with the hiking trails:

Please think of your meetup organizers as fulfilling a social function in getting people together for this trip. We are not experts in hiking/snowshoeing safety, we are not trained guides, and we do not hold ourselves out to have any medical knowledge or preparation. While we will attempt to plan something that will work for everyone and will try to head off the problems that we can see and anticipate, you should not come on this trip if you would not feel fit or able to safely complete this trip on your own. Our attempts to increase the comfort and safety of the group should not lead you to believe that we are taking responsibility for your safety. Our underlying assumption is that if you come on this trip, you are responsible adult who will use good judgement and that you have the skills and ability complete this trip safely.

It is important that you have adequate supplies/equipment, and are able to carry them for the length of the trail.

These supplies include:
Non-cotton clothing in layers - sufficient to keep you warm overnight in case of emergency
(For me, this means a long pants, a long shirt, either a fleece vest or an insulating fleece jacket).

Hiking Boots, trail runners or other waterproof shoes which you know will work for you
A wind and water proof jacket (water-proof breathable is best)
Extra socks
Water & high energy food and snacks (more than you think you will use)

I will be a great day!

Happy snnwoshoeing
