ROS-Industrial: The Open-Source Industrial Robotics Operating System

Details
Robots come in many shapes and sizes and can operate in a diverse set of environments. Building sturdy, general-purpose robot software is complicated. The Robot Operating System (ROS) is an open-source software development kit that helps you build robot applications.
ROS-Industrial is an open-source project that extends the advanced capabilities of ROS to manufacturing automation and robotics. The ROS-Industrial repository includes interfaces for common industrial manipulators, grippers, sensors, and device networks. It also provides software libraries for automatic 2D/3D sensor calibration, process path/motion planning, applications like Scan-N-Plan, developer tools like the Qt Creator ROS Plugin, and a training curriculum that is specific to the needs of manufacturers.
We'll be hosting Shaun Edwards, CTO, and Co-Founder at Plus One Robotics and Founder of ROS-Industrial, for this meetup. Shaun will be sharing the background to why ROS-I exists, targeted use cases, and how you can get involved.
About Shaun
Shaun Edwards is currently CTO and Co-Founder at Plus One Robotics, a venture-backed startup, based in San Antonio, TX (US), focused on deploying robotics in logistics and e-commerce operations. Shaun's role at Plus One includes forming the company technical vision, interfacing with customers, creating product roadmaps, and software architecture. From April 2005 to October 2016, Shaun Edwards was a Principal Engineer at Southwest Research Institute (SwRI). SwRI is a non-profit organization that provides contract R&D to governments and commercial companies. Shaun Edwards was responsible for promoting to customers and executing R&D projects. He deployed industrial automation and robotic solution for applications including food manufacturing, aerospace production, logistics operations, and autonomous vehicles. He has broad knowledge of a wide range of technologies, including PLCs, motion control, robotics, computer vision, artificial intelligence, and software development processes. In 2011, Shaun founded the ROS(Robot Operating System)-Industrial open source project. By 2012, the open-source project included developers in Europe and was supported by a Consortium of commercial companies. As of 2017, ROS-Industrial is a worldwide organization with footprints in the US, Europe, and Asia, supported by some of the largest commercial companies in industrial robotics and automation. Shaun Edwards holds a Masters of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH.
About ROS-Industrial
The ROS-Industrial Open Source project began as the collaborative endeavor of Yaskawa Motoman Robotics, Southwest Research Institute, and Willow Garage to support the use of ROS for manufacturing automation. The software repository, hosted on GitHub, was founded by Shaun Edwards (SwRI) in January 2012. Led by SwRI, the ROS-Industrial Consortium Americas launched in March 2013. There is also a ROS-I Consortium Europe, led by Fraunhofer IPA in Stuttgart, Germany, and a ROS-Industrial Consortium Asia Pacific, led by ARTC and NTU in Singapore. The Consortia supports the ROS-Industrial community by providing training, technical support and setting the roadmap for ROS-I. The Consortia also conducts pre-competitive joint industry projects to develop new capabilities for ROS-I.
About Plus One Robotics
Plus One Robotics builds robot perception software and solutions. They mitigate the persistent shortage of manual labor and allow your personnel to flow from monotonous tasks to higher-value work. Through the integration of off-the-shelf high performance manipulators with their advanced vision capabilities, your robots will bridge the gap between steady-state volume and surge. Plus One's novel approach to human/robot collaboration and supervised autonomy ensures the systems are scalable, flexible, and fault-tolerant.
