What we're about
The golden age of exploration may be over but there are still amazing places to discover where few people have gone before. Even though we live in Iowa there are still countless outdoor treasures to uncover where untold adventures lie.
We defy those who decry the lack of wilderness and set out to explore those hidden places the timid will never find. We hike, but not necessarily on trails alone.
We canoe, but not necessarily on the established routes alone. Sometimes we camp, but not necessarily in campgrounds alone. Rain, sleet, and snow do not deter us.
We do what others can't, won't , or say is not possible. In the challenge and thrill of doing so we come together with like minded people to discover more about the world and above all, to explore as a team, help one another and to have lots of fun!
Founded by Chris Beckley in 2014, the Iowa Explorers Club is made up of people of all ages with diverse backgrounds. Membership is free and the only requirement to join is to be at least moderately fit and have a positive attitude.
"We must not cease from exploration and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we began and to know the place for the first time." -T.S. Elliot
NEW MEMBER POLICIES
We've had a number of issues involving first time attendees to our events lately and I have decided to make some changes in order to try to correct the situation. We have a limited number of spots and have lots of people on the waitlist wanting to attend. No-shows prevent people on the waitlist from attending. People cancelling their RSVP during the last few days before a trip makes it difficult as well because most people on the waitlist have already changed their plans. If you are a first time attendee please commit to attending the event if you RSVP.
1) No-shows: First time attendees have a much higher likelihood of not showing up to an event. This is disrespectful to the people on the waitlist who would have liked to have joined us. First time attendees who RSVP but don't show up at the event will be removed from the group.
2) People on the waitlist who change their plans but don't take themselves off the waitlist: If your plans change please take yourself off the waitlist as soon as possible. Lately, it seems like many first time attendees on the waitlist change their plans, but fail to remove themselves from the waitlist. Then, after they're moved from the waitlist to a confirmed spot on the trip, they don't change their RSVP. It is very time consuming for trip organizers to private message these people to reconfirm. First time attendees who do not remove themselves from the waitlist when their plans change will be removed from the meetup group. NOTE: Many times there are cancellations the last few days before a trip so you probably will be moved into a confirmed spot so please remove yourself from the waitlist if you no longer plan to attend.
3) Last Minute Cancellations: First time attendees who cancel within 72 hours of the trip will be removed from the group. This is a problem because many people on the waitlist have changed their plans by this time, but haven't removed themselves from the waitlist, and it's very time consuming for trip organizers to message each person to reconfirm. If you're not planning on attending please cancel at the very least 1-2 weeks prior to the trip.
