Fact-Checking Amid Social Distancing -- Advanced Tools for Journalists
Social distancing increases the importance of providing solid, fact-based information to increasingly isolated readers who are most at risk for falling prey to disinformation, deep fakes, and rumors. Traditional fact-checking tools that rely on access to policymakers is hampered as well as those policymakers may not be available over the phone (because they are busy working on pandemic-related policy); they are certainly not available for random hallway encounters or a quick coffee. The risk of generating echo-chamber stories increases as hard information becomes more difficult to access.
Many of the public policy initiatives being implemented are not only very technical but they will generate long-lasting implications for the economy and could be difficult to unwind later. Because they are technical, they are easily missed.
This meetup will provide members with helpful guides and suggestions for how to identify concrete facts even without access to advanced AI systems. It will also provide members with strategies for finding different angles and under-reported items that will benefit everyone. Data-driven journalism requires access not only to quantitative data and the ability to generate data-driven stories; it also requires access to unstructured data (words) from the public policy process. In this Meetup, we'll review a range of options and strategies, some of which are free. Specialized public interest rates for acess to the more advanced technology options will also be available to participants as a public service.
