Join us for this partnered event with Indy IxDA, Louisville IxDA, Cincinnati IxDA, & Adobe XD with Timothy Bardlavens on 🧠Navigating Whiteness in Product Design.
Researchers are increasingly sharing data showing that some digital products harm and exclude historically underinvested communities. Some of these companies, including Facebook, are working to remedy this. But where to start?
Key Takeaways
🛠What is Whiteness?
🛠How does it show up multi-culturally both in the US and globally?
🛠How do we navigate and move beyond?
Design leader, Timothy Bardlavens, suggests that the design field, and by extension tech, must question its overwhelming whiteness—power centered on white people—in order to make better products. Using examples from popular media, digital product design and his own experience working as a Black designer, he unpacks the concept of whiteness and how Black designers navigate its layers to make space for themselves in the field and help create more inclusive products.
Timothy Bardlavens is a Product Design Leader, a Cultural Strategist, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) specialist, a Fellowship Co-Founder, and International Speaker & Facilitator. https://www.bardlavens.com/
