Getting Started with Netlify (workshop)

Details

In our first Meetup we talked about the basics and power of the JAMstack. Now it's time to put that theory into practice. In the first of a three-part workshop on building a web project using the JAMstack, we're going to focus on Netlify.

Aside from coining the term "JAMstack," Netlify serves as a powerful platform on which to deploy dynamically-driven static sites. And the best part is it's basic features are completely free!

We'll spend a little less than an hour exploring how easy it is to deploy a website by leveraging the power of Netlify and connecting it to our GitHub repository. This exploration will is appropriate for newbies and old hats alike. We will cover some basic concepts, but we will also brush the surface of more complex topics. The workshop will flow to serve every developer in the room.

Agenda:
5:30pm - Doors open & networking
6:00pm - Welcome, Announcements, & Netlify overview
6:10pm - Workshop: Getting Started with Netlify
7:00pm - Wrap Up

Prerequisites for this Meetup are as follows:

  1. Bring your laptop!
  2. Install your favorite text editor on your laptop. If you don't have a preference, try VS Code (https://code.visualstudio.com/) or Atom (https://atom.io/).
  3. Install Git (https://git-scm.com/). While it will help if you have some familiarity with Git (and GitHub), it's okay if you aren't familiar with either. We're going to run a few commands. But it's an important piece of the puzzle, so we will cover it.
  4. Sign up for GitHub (https://github.com/).
  5. Sign up for Netlify (https://www.netlify.com/).

If you need help with any of these steps (other than the laptop), plan to arrive at 5:30 and we will help you get started.
