Summer JS

IT’S. SO. SUMMERY.

You’re probably reading this in the park right now, which is totally great.

We’ve got three awesome talks that are definitely worth coming inside for (also, we’ll have some beers/juice so you can cool off).

Ruth John - A Journey Through Web API Space & Time

More browser APIs seem to be cropping up daily, it’s hard to keep track of what’s what and which is which. Don’t panic, Ruth takes us on a tour of what’s past, what’s present and what the future holds, so you can level up and feel a lot calmer about what’s on the event horizon.

Seren Davies - Death to Icon Fonts

Do you use icon fonts? Are you aware of their shortcomings? In this talk Seren will highlight some of the downsides with using icon fonts and show you an alternative.

Max Glenister - A running start at Google Cardboard with JavaScript

(This talk will not contain any actual running)

Gordon Williams - JavaScript for things

Controlling the real world with JavaScript and Espruino Pico. Gordon will show you how - and why - it's more fun to develop embedded software with JavaScript than C.

Regrettably, I couldn't make it to this meetup (ended up spending the week in hospital). Did anyone film it? Is it online?

Best meetup I have been to so far - great speakers and good atmosphere. Thanks All!....

If anyone has any feedback or questions for the guys from Elsevier.io then it would be really appreciated if you could send it across to me. Ideas, interest, questions, recommendations etc will all be well received. Thanks again!

The 4th dimension is precisely the one that doesn't allow me to come to the venue :(

Any recommended retailer for Google Cardboard (or the like) purchases?

    July 10, 2015

    • Max G.

Hi Matthew, I've bought both plastic and card versions of Google Cardboard from sellers on Amazon. The plastic one is of a good build quality, but lacks the magnometer switch and comes in at about £12 (http://www.amazon.co....), the card one is just like the official Google one, and can be bought for about £4 -- the precise version I bought is no longer available, but they should be easy to find. Google recently released a "Cardboard 2.0" which has a slightly different focal range (48mm vs 28mm or something), so worth baring that in mind.

I got my Google Cardboard of ebay for about £4 and took less than a week to arrive! :)

Hi looks like an interesting line up! For those who can be there only in spirit, is there any chance of videos of the talks or the presentations being online, etc?

    July 10, 2015

    • Ben F.

Hizni, sure - we'll try and live stream again (quality was a bit rubbish last time, but we've got an idea to make it better)
