What we're about

UPDATE JUNE 27

We are excited to be restarting our outdoor meetup events! Most events have a limit of 10 people maximum so please respect this.

Please also consider donating to the Japan Friends Meetup group if you have been a frequent member these past few years. We are non-profit but collect donations to support regular meetup costs. As you can imagine, this has been very difficult given the current circumstances, and we would hate to have to shut down the group. If interested, please message Kyle or Tomo. Thanks in advance everyone for your support!!

Do you have an interest in Japan, its culture, language, or food? Are you Japanese and looking for a safe and friendly environment to make Canadian and international friends and practice your English? Or are you an avid traveler looking for exotic new places to visit? The Japan Victoria Friends Meetup Group is a social group that promotes intercultural exchange while having fun. Our members are from all over the world, and many have some kind of connection to Japan. We have regular conversation meetups twice per week where we chat and practice our language fluency, and we also do a few social gatherings each month too. All are welcome! Come hang out with us and learn about a different culture!

As of February 2020, we ask that all new members use their real name (first name, or last name, or both) and also use a picture that shows who they are. This is to make sure that Group Leaders can know who will be participating in the events and make sure that everyone has a good time.

Please note that we don't allow aggressive or predatory behaviour in our group. This is a place to make friends and new connections. If you feel like you are the target of any unwanted behaviour, please tell one of the Group Leaders immediately. We are here to keep the group safe and fun for everyone.

We are also proud to be partnered with our friends at the Japanadian Meetup Group in Vancouver, BC. For members of ours who might be moving or traveling to Vancouver, please consider checking the Japandian group out at one of their many weekly events! We are all friends, after all. https://www.meetup.com/Japanadian-Canadian-Japanese-Friendship/

Hike from Bear Mountain to Mt Finlayson!

Bear Mountain

Hi all, I mentioned a while back that I could lead a hike up and around Mt. Finlayson, starting from Bear Mountain Resort, so people could bus.

People will need $5 for a bus daypass, or a valid bus pass.

Here the plan:

People leaving from downtown:
take the 9:26am #50 bus at Fort and Douglas, by RBC
get off at "Goldstream and Claude" bus stop
cross the street
walk back to the BMO, to the "Goldstream and Bryn Maur" bus stop
catch the #52 Bear Mountain bus
arrive at Bear Mountain resort, 10:26am.

People in Langford:
catch the 10:09am #52 bus from "Goldstream and Bryn Maur"
the bus arrives at 10:26am

If you're driving, we can meet at the Bear Mountain bus stop.

The Bear Mountain path joins the Mt Finlayson trail about halfway along its length (this is start of the steep part). The trail is rocky and people should have good shoes, water, and dress in layers.

After reaching the top, we can rest for a bit and then we'll take the back trail down. This trail isn't as steep and rounds the base back to Bear Mountain. It should be a shortish hike... maybe 2–2.5 hours?

Additionally, please consider bringing $2 for donation to the Meetup group to cover group fees. Thank you!

Conversation Meetup

As we will be outside, it is recommended that you bring a picnic blanket to sit on. You are also welcome to bring snacks/non-alcoholic drinks for yourself.

Please bring $1 to $2 for donation to support the Meetup group's online costs.
