Welcome to JFOAM! I’ve formed this group to fill the need in the greater Milwaukee area for a safe, fully transparent, member-driven Meetup where people are helpful and that allows any member to host fun outdoors adventures of any sort. You know from attending our events over the years that those who join us are genuinely friendly people who love relaxing and being social while maybe getting exercise and enjoying nature and the outdoors. From hiking, to camping, festivals, picnics, skiing, biking, and swimming--you name it—if it’s outdoors and fun your event is welcome here. If you’d like to host an event, contact me with details sufficient to tell members what they need to know in order to attend and enjoy themselves, using past events as a guide if you like.
I’ll be enforcing a strict policy requiring everyone to have a very recognizable face shot on their profile. First, it will allow the event hosts and other attendees to recognize and welcome you to the events. Second, it ensures everyone’s safety. No face shot no membership no exceptions.
***PACE of hikes: For a number of years, I have tried to allow for slower-paced hikers and have been able to adjust hike pace accordingly. Unfortunately, my schedule has gotten busier, so we've needed to change our hikes to always--unless stated otherwise--go at a moderate to brisk pace, which is usually close to 3 mph. We might be a bit slower in winter. This will also allow members who have time constraints to plan better. Thanks for understanding.
I don’t charge a membership fee but will accept donations of any size either through the site or in person to cover the fees Meetup HQ charges me to put up a group. Any funds in excess of my costs at the end of each year will be returned to the group by sponsoring a group event or donating them to one of the venues we frequent so often, depending on the amount. Unfortunately, Meetup has done away with the "Donate" button here on the home page. If you wish to donate, please use the following link, which will take you directly to the Donate page:
I’ll do everything I can to make the group safe, but each member is ultimately responsible for his or her own well-being at any event, including knowledge of getting to events and finding his or her way while there. That all said—if you have questions, please ask!
DISCLAIMER: I'll answer question as quickly as I can, which usually means within a day or two. I strive to be very helpful, but questions that have answers here or on specific event pages will likely receive a surprised silence. I now have a cell dumb phone (talk and text only), but due to work and other responsibilities cannot carry it with me all the time. The number will be provided to those attending an event. I'll try to have it on 1-2 hours before each event. I am learning how to text.
I look forward to seeing you all in the great outdoors! Thanks for joining.
