Create Java applications, easier, simpler and faster with Quarkus (Brown Bag)

We are launching Brown Bag Lunch and Learn.
We will host Zoom presentation, Q&A or mingle every Tuesday[masked].

Max number of attendees are 100.

Developer Joy!
Now you can effectively create Java applications, easier, simpler and faster with Quarkus, S.M. Shaaf, Red Hat

Abstract
You can deploy your applications to Kubernetes; that's great! You can have pipelines and a breadth of tools to do analysis, etc. But what about how you develop and what you develop, and finally, how you interact with applications deployed in Kubernetes while in the development inner loop. How can that be done easier, simpler, faster? Java has been there for a long time, and all of us have ways to develop applications and tools that we all love. So how does Quarkus do any of this differently?

Live coding, adding functionality, extensions without restarting, spinning up dev services e.g., databases, making coding and testing easier and continuous, enhancing the inner loop, etc. In this talk, I will create an application from scratch with Quarkus, add databases to it, use streaming with Kafka, etc. And finally, debug it while it's deployed in Kubernetes using my dev machine and effectively live code remotely. Join this talk to learn about the Java developers journey to developer Joy!

Combining Java, JavaFX and electronics on Raspberry Pi (Brown Bag Lunch)

Combining Java, JavaFX and electronics on the Raspberry Pi
Frank Delporte, Toadi

Abstract
Java, JavaFX and a Raspberry Pi are an ideal combination for any project where you want to connect software and hardware (LEDs, buttons, sensors...) with a beautiful, easy-to-use user interface. Let's go through the process of building a JavaFX touchscreen user interface to control some electronic components using the Pi4J library.

You will learn that Java works just as well on a small personal computer of only 50€ and allows you to use your existing programming skills to build applications which can interact with the physical world thanks to cheap components. Maybe your next project will be a game with an Arcade-controller, or a dashboard to see the state of multiple sensors on a machine. The possibilities are endless!

Monotasking (Brown Bag Lunch)

Online event

We will host Zoom presentation, Q&A or mingle every Tuesday[masked].

Monotasking
Staffan Nöteberg, Rekursiv

Abstract
What is the best use of my time right now? Isn’t that the ultimate agile question to ask yourself? And we want to ask it often enough to not get stuck in less important tasks, but not too frequently to avoid breaking our focus.

Monotasking is an agile method scaled down to one person. It helps you to focus, prioritize, and collaborate with others in a simple and natural way. It draws on scientific research and it affirms our great intuition.

In this session, Staffan will talk about how we may manage all too long to-do lists and how to get started quickly in the morning.
