The Smooth Speech Toastmasters Club was established in 1985 and was the first Toastmasters club in the world established specifically to support people recovering from a stutter, stammer or other speech disability. Doug Spinks (Distinguished Toastmaster) was the driving force in setting up our club.

Our club is still going strong and meets every other Tuesday night at Club Burwood, Sydney and also online using Zoom. We run an exciting and engaging formal agenda, packed with speaking tasks and challenges. Members are strongly encouraged to fully engage and progress through their chosen Toastmasters personal and leadership development program using the Toastmasters Pathways online learning management system.

We welcome treated and untreated people with a stutter, stammer or other speaking disability, and everyone else. We welcome people who are completing or have completed any treatment program for stuttering, whether this be the Smooth Speech treatment, the McGuire Program or any other program - don't let our club name let you think we accept Smooth Speech graduates only. About half our members have received treatment for stuttering.

This is a safe, supportive and also challenging environment in which to improve your public speaking skills, practice your speaking technique(s) and increase your comfort with public speaking. Members find they develop improved interpersonal and speaking skills for use in the home, with friends and professionally. People who join our club find us to be friendly, inclusive and very helpful and understanding. If you want to gain confidence in public speaking in a supportive environment, then give us a try. You won’t regret it.

Wynyard Toastmasters meets every 1st and 3rd Wednesday each month at 12.30-1.30pm in the Sydney CBD [Currently online using Zoom]

NOTE: We are temporarily combining our meetings with the NAB Sydney club.

Our mission is to help people develop strong communication and leadership skills.

We are a dynamic, fun group of professionals from Standards Australia, Arab Bank and corporate and non-corporate companies in the nearby area. We are conveniently located at the Dexus building on the corner of Margaret and Clarence street, right next to Wynyard station, and a short walk from Circular Quay.

If you're looking to improve your public speaking skills, come along to one of our meetings and see if it's for you. We run through a rapid-fire one hour agenda every meeting including:

• Prepared speeches by our members
• 'Table Topics' - an opportunity to practise impromptu speaking skills by getting up and talking about a mystery topic without any prior preparation.
• 'Evaluations' - positive feedback with recommendations to help you improve your skills.

Note: This club was named 'AS 86278 (Toast)' from March 2014 to November 2018, and 'Bridge Street Toastmasters' from November 2018 to July 2020.

This club is open to all visitors. We are currently meeting online via Zoom due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We meet every second Wednesday. Meetings are held from 12:15pm to 1:30pm.

What does a typical meeting look like?

First half is people giving speeches out of their pathways program to progress through the certifications. You are then given feedback in a positive way after the speech

Table topics where we have impromptu speeches where we pick random topics and everyone has the opportunity to participate with 1 minute speeches. Then there is feedback for all afterwards.
There is a general review where we give general feedback, get guest feedback, share who went over and under time as well as share how many ums and ah’s people said
Key point is this is a supportive safe space where everyone makes mistakes, is happy to learn and give and receive feedback.
