Jordan Bernt Peterson (born June 12, 1962) is a Canadian clinical psychologist, cultural critic, and professor of psychology at the University of Toronto. His main areas of study are in abnormal, social, and personality psychology, with a particular interest in the psychology of religious and ideological belief, and the assessment and improvement of personality and performance.
Politically, Peterson describes himself as a classic British liberal. He is a philosophical pragmatist. In a 2017 interview, Peterson identified as a Christian. Peterson draws inspiration from Jung's philosophy of religion and holds views similar to the Christian existentialism of Søren Kierkegaard and Paul Tillich. He also has respect for Taoism, as it views nature as a struggle between order and chaos, and posits that life would be meaningless without this duality. When asked in 2018 if he believes in God, Peterson responded: "I think the proper response to that is No, but I'm afraid He might exist".
Many, including Jordan himself, attribute his rise to "fame" to the (unconscious) hunger for the messages he’s trying to convey especially in adolescent males who make up a majority of his audience. Since he first got attention following a YouTube post where he criticized Bill C-16 in Canada, both his YouTube channels gathered more than 40.000.000 views, not to mention the countless other channels and videos dedicated to him.
We decided to create this Meetup free for all to join because we feel that we need a platform here in Belgium for open, honest and truthful discussion about Jordan’s ideas and works. At the time of writing, this is the first and only Belgian Meetup focused on Jordan’s ideas.
Beware, this is not a Meetup that blindly swallows his words nor is the intention to create a kind of cult-following. We welcome everyone, including critics. The only condition we impose is to have open, honest and truthful discussions.
Topics that will be discussed:
- Who is Jordan Peterson and who influenced him?
- “Self-Authoring” suite
- “Understand Myself” program
- The Biblical Series
- "12 Rules for Life: an antidote to Chaos"
- "Maps of Meaning" (book and lectures)
- Personality lectures
For those new to Jordan Peterson, we advise to view his first appearance on the Joe Rogan Podcast. Part from this talk being a good introduction to Jordan, it’ll help to see if he “clicks” with you:
