v2017.41 - Mr Russell

Details
Bertrand Arthur William Russell, 3rd Earl Russell, OM (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Member_of_the_Order_of_Merit), FRS (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fellow_of_the_Royal_Society)[59] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bertrand_Russell#cite_note-frs-59) (/ˈrʌsəl/ (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/English); 18 May 1872 – 2 February 1970) was a British philosopher, logician (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mathematical_logic), mathematician, historian, writer, social critic (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_critic), political activist and Nobel laureate. At various points in his life he considered himself a liberal, a socialist, and a pacifist (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacifist), but he also admitted that he had "never been any of these things, in any profound sense". He was born in Monmouthshire (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monmouthshire_(historic)) into one of the most prominent aristocratic families in the United Kingdom.
In the early 20th century, Russell led the British "revolt against idealism (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Idealism)". He is considered one of the founders of analytic philosophy (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Analytic_philosophy) along with his predecessor Gottlob Frege (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gottlob_Frege), colleague G. E. Moore (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G._E._Moore), and protégé Ludwig Wittgenstein (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ludwig_Wittgenstein). He is widely held to be one of the 20th century's premier logicians (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logician). With A. N. Whitehead (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfred_North_Whitehead) he wrote Principia Mathematica (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Principia_Mathematica), an attempt to create a logical basis for mathematics. His philosophical essay "On Denoting (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On_Denoting)" has been considered a "paradigm of philosophy". His work has had a considerable influence on mathematics, logic (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logic), set theory (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Set_theory), linguistics (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linguistics), artificial intelligence (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artificial_intelligence), cognitive science (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitive_science), computer science (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_science) (see type theory (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Type_theory) and type system (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Type_system)), and philosophy, especially the philosophy of language (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philosophy_of_language), epistemology (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epistemology), and metaphysics (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metaphysics).

We're not strictly discussing Mr Russell although his inventions, and how it affect us today might just be a great conversation starter.
CHANGE OF VENUE NOTICE: Nino's has closed down due to the continuous upgrades of every last square millimeter in the Rosebank commercial precinct!
Our new venue will be Doppio Zero in The First @ Rosebank Mall. We'll update the venue for this event if an alternate venue can be secured. If you have any suggestions, please let us know!
To get to Doppio, find Motherland Coffee in the Zone. Then enter the Firs through the sliding doors right by Motherland. Take a left past the Fish Monger and head into the piazza, Doppio will be in the far left hand corner.
We'd like to split the table in two, one part for general conversational learning and sharing, and another for open source project work. For the open source part we're working on creating effects for musical instruments with a Raspberry Pi. It is a long-term project for fun and learning.
Alternatively bring along your favourite project (or a project you want to contribute to) and leverage the expertise of other open source contributors! We can help you get started, help with triaging or just offer some general guidance.
A lot of what we do is built on open source, lets all give back a little, together!
