If you like to be outdoors, would like to learn more about nature through observation, can use a pen or pencil to make marks on a page, and are able walk on trails, then please join us! In nature journaling, you use drawing or photography along with writing to record what you discover during walks in the woods, in fields, along wetlands, or in your own backyard. We meet every 2nd and 4th Saturday morning of the month. Gorman Nature Center will be our "base of operations," but we will also go to other locations to enjoy the natural beauty of our area. At each get-together, we will mix it up. A little hiking, a little nature study, a little sketching and writing, a little sharing . . . This is for all ages and abilities. Children who have a genuine interest in nature drawing are welcome when accompanied and monitored by an adult. Materials are simple. Bring: 1. Paper -- a notebook/journal or loose sheets. (If using loose sheets, bring something firm to hold your paper while you draw/write, such as a clipboard or a folder. 2. Pen(s) and/or pencil(s). 3. Other art supplies are optional. You will also need to bring: 1. Something to sit on to protect you from the damp ground. (A garbage bag?) 2. Snacks and drink. Lunch is also a possibility. (If it's decent weather, we might plan to eat while on the trail.) 3. A backpack to carry it all. TYPE: Nature Walk| PACE: Conversational -- 2-3 mph | TERRAIN: Woods and/or open trail, some hills, possibly some mud | DIFFICULTY: Easy to Moderate | DISTANCE: 2 - 3 miles more or less | TIME: Approximately 2 hours (more if we have lunch together) Meeting Location Details: See comments. Breaks, Restrooms: Restrooms are usually available at our chosen locations. Weather: If the weather is nasty or dangerous for being outdoors, we may be able to do our nature journaling inside at Gorman Nature Center. If it's just raining, wear a rain gear and bring an umbrella because we'll be outside enjoying it. Also Consider: • Wearing comfortable socks and athletic footwear with good traction. • Wearing hats, sunglasses, sunscreen and insect repellant as needed. • Wearing layers, depending on anticipated temperature. Windbreakers layered over fleece are good options if it's chilly. Remember, we'll be walking some of the time and sitting/standing some of the time. Cancellation: Check your email (if you're on the list) or Richland County Park District on Facebook for locations changes or cancellations. Your RSVP acknowledges that you choose to walk at your own risk.
