  • CIRCULAR WALK- HAWKWOOD COUNTRY ESTATE and PETTS WOOD.

    Needs a location

    £5.00

Get out, explore and enjoy London's abundant green spaces and surprising surrounding countryside. Give up the city streets for a day and breathe some fresh air. Improve your overall fitness levels.

Today we explore some of South London's wooded areas, starting at Petts Wood Station and following the route to Hawkwood Country Estate before entering Petts Wood.

The Hawkwood Estate is managed by the National Trust and takes in 230 acres of grazed pastures and small blocks of woodland. It borders onto the more famous Petts Wood. It is the contrast on this walk that sets it apart from others. From the sweeping meadows to dense woodland, views across working farmland and the gentle stroll along a babbling brook.

Petts Wood: William Pett, part of the so-called Pett Dynasty, was a master shipbuilder whose family were leading shipwrights for 200 years. He supplied oaks from Petts Wood to his shipyards on the River Thames at Deptford and Woolwich. Petts Wood is now also managed by the National Trust.

This is a circular walk ending back at Petts Wood Station for trains back to London.
