More info: Crystal Palace Park was a Victorian pleasure ground used for many cultural, patriotic and sporting events. The Park is most famous for the the reconstructed Crystal Palace containing the Great Exhibition which had been originally located in Hyde Park before it closed in 1851, After more than 80 years at its new location at Crystal Palace Park the famous glass and iron Palace was ultimately destroyed by fire 1936. The park once housed a football ground, which hosted the FA Cup finals from 1895 to 1914. The extensive grounds were also used in pre-war days for motorcycle and, after the 1950s, for motorcar racing. Also here is the famous Crystal Palace athletics track where many world records have been achieved. Dinosaurs: Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins erected the first lifesized models of the (then) newly-discovered dinosaurs and other extinct animals in the park. Landmark: Crystal Palace transmitter visible for many miles across London. DULWICH FOREST and SYDENHAM HILL WOODS formed part of the ancient Great North Wood, an ancient great oak forest (6,000 years old) that once stretched all the way between Camberwell and Croyden. We will come across an old railway path. A footbridge passes over the remains of the track, and it was from this bridge that the impressionist painter Camille Pissarro in 1871 painted a view from a foot bridge crossing the railway looking down towards the now long forgotten Lordship Lane Station). The Crystal Palace and South London Junction Railway went through Sydenham Hill Wood, terminating at the west of the Crystal Palace. It opened on 1 August 1865. The fortunes of the railway waned with those of the Crystal Palace, declining after the Crystal Palace burned down in 1936. The last service ran in 1954. The track was lifted in 1956 and the terminus demolished in 1961 With luck we will even stumble across a fabled 'Ancient' ruin: (A ruined monastery, believed to lie in the midst of the woods surrounded by brambles and ivy.)
