  • EXPLORE OSTERLEY PARK, GRAND UNION CANAL & HANWELL LOCKS (ZONE 4).

    Osterley Underground Station

Enjoy London! Get out and see your City in the company of great friends! Join us for an easy leisurely Saturday afternoon stroll around Osterley. (Travelcard Zone 4). This is a 5 mile circular walk from Osterley underground station right through Osterley Park and almost back to the starting point again. We go past historic Osterley House and Hanwell Locks on the Brentford arm of The Grand Union Canal through some woods and will end up at a pub a relatively short 15/20 mins walk from Osterley tube. Start: Outside Osterley tube station. Although it is not our intention to visit inside Osterley House on this occasion, nevertheless we pass close by and you will see that it is a magnificent neo-classical house and interiors, landscape park and gardens. It is indeed a spectacular mansion surrounded by gardens, park and farmland, Osterley is one of the last surviving country estates in London. Once described as 'the palace of palaces', Osterley was created in the late 18th century by architect and designer Robert Adam for the Child family to entertain and impress their friends and clients. This impressive mansion was once a redbrick Tudor house built in 1576 by Sir Thomas Gresham. Acquired by Sir Francis Child in 1713 as the perfect symbol of his new status and prosperity; Sir Francis engaged Robert Adam from 1760 to remodel and transform Osterley into 'the palace of palaces' that you see today. This is a countryside walk which can be muddy in places and includes walking through the some woods along canals and negotiating some stiles. Please wear appropriate walking walking boots/shoes. We will finish at the The Hare and Hounds pub, Windmill Lane, Isleworth, Middlesex TW7 5PR which is about 15/20 minutes walk from Osterley tube.
