Stay Fit! Get out and walk. Visit parts of London that you would not otherwise have an opportunity to see.
EXPLORE LONDON! Enjoy London! Get out and see your City in the company of great friends! Join us for a SUNDAY AFTERNOON WALK in Golders Hill Park and Hampstead Heath.
This is a particularly scenic stroll. Golders Hill Park is a very attractive park, containing water features, a wooded area, mini zoo and butterfly house. Today we also explore a different part of Hampstead Heath as we stroll about 5.5 miles in total through Golders Hill Park and London's forgotten Zoo , the West Heath (including the Secret Pergola and Hill Garden), and of couse, Hampstead Heath and onward to our pub.
Hampstead Pergola is a wonderful example of faded grandeur, and is undeniably one of London’s hidden secret treasures. It is essentially a raised walkway, overgrown with vines and exotic flowers, and is set amidst some wonderfully dramatic gardens.
The history of the Pergola goes back to 1904 when Lord Leverhulme, a wealthy philanthropist and lover of landscape gardening, purchased a large town house on the Heath called “The Hill”. Over the following year Lord Leverhulme he decided to build a legacy; his Pergola. He wanted it to be the setting for extravagant Edwardian garden parties, while at the same time being a place where his family and friends could spend long summer evenings enjoying the spectacular gardens (pictured above) and views over Hampstead Heath.
