Steve Wilkes,Founder and Chief Technology Officer - Striim

Bio:
Steve Wilkes is a life-long technologist, architect, and hands-on development executive. Prior to founding Striim, Steve was the senior director of the Advanced Technology Group at GoldenGate Software. Here he focused on data integration, and continued this role following the acquisition by Oracle, where he also took the lead for Oracle’s cloud data integration strategy. His earlier career included Senior Enterprise Architect at The Middleware Company, principal technologist at AltoWeb and a number of product development and consulting roles including Cap Gemini’s Advanced Technology Group. Steve has handled every role in the software lifecycle and most roles in a technology company at some point during his career. He still codes in multiple languages, often at the same time. Steve holds a Master of Engineering Degree in microelectronics and software engineering from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the UK.

Kafka's Critical Role in Streaming Integration

Abstract:
Apache Kafka’s value is not limited to providing a fast, scalable distributed messaging system. It is also an essential component of any complete in-memory computing platform supporting streaming integration. In his talk, Steve Wilkes, CTO and co-founder of Striim, will cover how to build enterprise-grade streaming integration applications with Kafka. Steve will focus on the key Kafka capabilities users can tap into, as well as the pitfalls to avoid. You will hear:

• The role of Kafka as a persistent messaging system essential for recovery and reliability

• How to integrate data on Kafka with streaming external reference data

• How to decide when Avro is and isn’t a good choice for a data format

• Why Kafka and complex event processing (CEP) work so well together

• Common use-case scenarios utilizing Kafka

• A detailed real-world case study of a well-known retailer utilizing Kafka to deliver a centralized hub for order processing

Tim Berglund, Head of Developer Experience - Confluent

Bio:
Tim is a teacher, author, and technology leader with Confluent, where he serves as the Senior Director of Developer Experience. He can frequently be found at speaking at conferences in the United States and all over the world. He is the co-presenter of various O’Reilly training videos on topics ranging from Git to Distributed Systems, and is the author of Gradle Beyond the Basics. He tweets as @tlberglund ( https://twitter.com/tlberglund ), blogs very occasionally at http://timberglund.com (http://timberglund.com/), and lives in Littleton, CO, USA with the wife of his youth and their youngest child, the other two having mostly grown up.
