The 9th Apache Kafka meetup

Details

2019 is just underway, and we have another Apache Kafka meetup scheduled. The next meetup is loaded with interesting topics from 3 different speakers. While the last meetup was centered a bit around Kafka Streams, this time we have topics that aren't that much related to each other. Check the agenda below and RSVP to make sure you get a seat!

-----

Agenda (preliminary):
5:30pm: Doors open
6:00pm - 6:30pm: Networking, Food and Drinks
6:30pm - 7:15pm: Real-life experience with Kafka @ Yolt by Lubos Mikusiak (Yolt)
7:20pm - 8:00pm: NodeJS and Apache Kafka by Herbrand Hofker (Kafka.Academy)
8:00pm - 8:45pm: Avro on Kafka. Technical aspects, integration and more by Andrew Snare (GoDataDriven)

Real-life experience with Kafka @ Yolt:
Yolt is about three years old company that started to build the backend and mobile apps from scratch. Although organizationally part of ING, the infrastructure is separate, what enabled to do things differently in some instances.

The backend consists of several tens of microservices, which communicate with each other. Originally, this communication was done over HTTP. Later on, the communication became more event driven and has been partially migrated to Kafka. In the presentation you will learn how we use Kafka to propagate data and events through the backend systems, what challenges we faced both on application and infrastructure levels and how we solved them.

NodeJS and Apache Kafka:
NodeJS is a very fast non blocking javascript engine that is very popular.
JSON and JSON Schema’s (Avro) have their origin in Javascript.
Angular 2 (7) by Google and Microsoft’s Typescript is also based on
javascript. In this demo we show you how to build Kafka Clients on
NodeJS with seamless integration with Angular 7.

Apache Avro & Kafka:
Avro is a format that is often used with Kafka for encoding messages. In this talk we’re going to dive into the technical aspects of how it works: the world of schemas and binary encodings. From this we’ll learn why a schema registry of some sort is needed, and briefly cover how integration with the Confluent Registry works. Time-permitting we’ll finish with some ideas for doing your own registry.
