What we're about

Kayak Portland, LLC's mission is to unite the diverse group of paddlers in the Portland Metro area while fostering Safety, Camaraderie, Stewardship, and Awareness on the water as an organized group.

Participants MUST Read! By joining and paddling with Kayak Portland, LLC it is assumed that you have read and Agree to the safety DISCLAIMER below.

Dear Kayakers/Paddlers,

Welcome to Kayak Portland, LLC, where our motto is Paddle With Friends! If you've been looking for a welcoming, inclusive group to paddle your kayak, canoe, or SUP with, you've found it! We consist of skill levels from beginner to expert and we’re here to have fun, share knowledge, and enjoy some very unique experiences on the Oregon/Washington waterways...all while promoting safety, camaraderie, stewardship and awareness.

At Kayak Portland, LLC, our biggest goal is to create an atmosphere of safe and fun events in which every member can grow in their skills while enjoying the company of others year round. We live in a place that encompasses such diverse types of water in so many different and beautiful settings, it's fantastic to use and share our group knowledge with each other to learn about them. Because our weather here in the northwest is generally mild, we do paddle year round with proper equipment, but notice that we may also post ‘pool sessions’ throughout the colder months so you can continue to have the opportunity to improve your skills even if you don’t want to brave the elements and colder winter water temperatures. The side benefits to our events, indoors and out, are the friendships that develop between members, and we try to accommodate those with ‘after-paddle’ camaraderie at local restaurants so we encourage you to attend those, too.

What You Need To Know!

It’s very important to note that Kayak Portland, LLC is an open, inclusive community group and not a tour company. You are responsible for providing your own equipment and keeping yourself safe. This includes always evaluating if your boat and gear are in good condition and safe for the event, as well as knowing your own paddling and self-rescue skills are up to the event you're joining. Most paddles have an adequate event description but if you have any questions ask in the event comments or send a message to myself of one of the assistant organizers for clarification. To paddle with us you must wear a PFD (lifejacket), have a whistle on your PFD, carry proof of a Waterway Access Aquatic Invasive Species permit (boats 10ft and up), and carry a light for evening/night paddles. In general, we follow the Coast Guard rules, except within our group you must WEAR the PFD, not just have it on board.

To Keep Us All Safe and Happy

Because our group is about fun and relaxation on the water, behavior that is unsafe or that leads others (knowingly or unknowingly) towards a dangerous outcome may result in immediate removal from our group. We are asking you to be self-aware. While you may be highly skilled, the people around you may be beginner paddlers and may follow you or your actions because they believe it to be safe. If you're a beginner paddler, please ask questions if you have any uncertainty about any part of an event. For this reason we ask that all members clearly communicate if they choose to leave the group during an event (which you may do at any time to go off in a different direction, or turn back) to the host/hostess of the event so no one is unaccounted for and the group isn't held up waiting for you to return. At that time you will be considered out of that event and paddling independently of the group. (Often, for those returning early, one of the group will paddle back with the person to the launch should they not feel up to finishing a paddle, this is a friendly courtesy because we care about people's safety on the water).

How Paddles Happens

I encourage you to think about places you'd like to paddle, or places you have paddled and want to share with the group, and then either host an event, or ask myself or the assistant organizers to host the event. Hosting is not hard and does not make you liable for people's safety or welfare. It simply means you're inviting people to paddle along with you. To post a paddle is as simple as reaching out to myself or an assistant organizer with the paddle details (where, when, time, event details) so we can add it to the calendar. Once we have it up we'll let you know so you can edit it and change or add content and then it will be published and sent out to everyone by email. We’ll support you as much as you need through this process. [Just a note: if you have other information you'd like to share such as selling or buying boats/gear with our group I ask that you post it on the discussion board where it will be emailed to all members.]

Please note that myself or the assistant organizers check through each event description to make sure important and relevant details are there, so don't feel offended if we fix spelling, maps, or details that we think might make it more clear. We will contact the event organizer before making any major edits. Also, please note that each Event Host/Hostess has the right to ask a paddler/s to NOT paddle with the group if they feel that person/s is willfully acting in a way that is disrespectful or a danger to the group. We take safety seriously and want everyone to feel comfortable.

(See the liability waiver below.)

Please read the electronic and legally reviewed waiver that protects all members as well as leaders from any coincidental or accidental occurrences which could render liability for creating, participating, or attending a meet-up. Kayaking, as any water sport, has inherent dangers, and as paddlers we need to respect and acknowledge these. Basically in short; take care of others as you would yourself and learn about and use proper equipment.

Again, welcome to Kayak Portland, LLC! This is truly a great group of like-minded water lovers working to have fun together, make friends, and stay safe while paddling. I look forward to meeting you at an event soon!

~ Julie
