Fri, August 8 - Paddle Scorton Creek, Sandwich

Details

Scorton Creek is a wonderful tidal creek that winds it's way through a scenic salt marsh.

We'll paddle as far as we can, taking a few detours along the way. When we get back to the launch site, the people who want to continue their paddle can head north, under 6A, and head toward the bay....the current can be swift where the creek meets the bay.

If you haven't been here before, leave plenty of time to find the launch. No parking sticker is ever required, but there is very limited parking area at this State Wildlife Reservation, so I am avoiding the weekend. Lots of people come here to walk their dogs, so parking places are taken by walkers as well as kayakers.

A high tide in Cape Cod Bay at 9:40 makes a 10:00 launch ideal.

As is true of most of the open water paddles on the Cape, this is not a good place to be in high winds. After you sign up, please make sure I can contact you by email or phone on August 6 & 7, in case the weather forces a change.

Paddles with this group are for experienced and energetic paddlers. This is not the place to "get experience on the water". You need to have that experience before paddling with us.

DIRECTIONS: THE MAP IS CORRECT. From US 6 (mid Cape Highway) take exit 3, and follow Quaker Meeting House Road north to MA 6A east. Turn right onto MA 6A and continue east 1.5 miles. You will pass June Ln and Pine Terrace on you right, then turn right onto a gravel road and go 0.2 mile to parking lot. On 6A, if you go over the bridge, you just missed the turn. There is a sign at the turn, but it was installed parallel to the road, so you can't see it (seriously)

From the east (from Yarmouth/Dennis), driving on 6A, when you are at the intersection of Rt 149 and 6A, start clocking it. Go 3.5 miles west on 6A from Rt 149. See on your RIGHT, Hammond, Torrey and Fort Hill Rd...take a left onto the dirt road, just past Fort Hill Rd. Go to the end of the very bumpy road and see the water.

Using your GPS, put in about 500 Highway 6A SANDWICH (every town on the Cape probably has an address of 500 Highway 6A)

Plan to arrive no later than 9:30 AM, as we will be in the water and paddling at 10:00 and you may have to park down the road.
