  • You can often see it beckoning you to come and explore it... now you can escape the city for the iconic Rangitoto Island as you conquer the summit with our specialist Ngāi Tai kaiārahi (guide).

    Experience a world of contrasts as you journey through Auckland’s largest, most diverse island sanctuary – a sacred place where you can explore the past, enjoy the present and support the future.

    This is a guided walk where a specialist Ngāi Tai kaiārahi (guide) will share their local knowledge and expertise, so you can feel a part of this stunning landscape.


    Get in Quick Before You Miss Out



    Once we get to Rangitoto we’ll take the Summit Track to the top.

    This is the shortest and most popular route to the summit begins at Rangitoto Wharf and climbs through lava fields and forest to the peak at 259 metres above sea level.

    The summit gives panoramic views of Auckland and the Hauraki Gulf.

    Time: 1 hr one way from Rangitoto Wharf

    Walking times are based on an average to slow pace, and will vary with different levels of fitness. Ensure you have plenty of time to complete your walk and catch the ferry.

    Discover the beauty of Aucklands Waitematā harbour, with a ferry to and from Rangitoto Island

    Your kaiārahi (guide) will share traditional and local stories about the newest addition to Aucklands Volcanic Ring.

    Experience Ngāi Tai tikanga (customs) as you are welcomed and hosted in traditional Ngāi Tai fashion

    Walk to the summit of Rangitoto and experience 360˚ panoramic views of greater Auckland

    Marvel at the alien like lava-scapes of Rangitoto.

    Learn about the cultural significance of the Islands to Iwi.

    Take in the breath taking view of the other Islands in the Hauraki Gulf.

    Learn about the regenerating forests, the endemic wildlife and the importance of biosecurity.

    Also learn about the ‘quirkiness/kiwiana’ of the historic bach communities on the Island.

    How the Day will Run

    8:45am Meet at Ferry Terminal on Quay Street

    9:15am Fullers Ferry departs

    9:45am Arrive at Rangitoto

    10.00 am Take the Summit Track with our kaiārahi (guide) to the top and enjoy lunch and the view

    12:45pm Catch the return ferry to Auckland and enjoy a glass of bubbles

    1:15pm Arrive back in Auckland

    - Wear sturdy walking shoes that can cope with the rugged lava surfaces.
