Maidu Lake Log Out (Mt Thielsen Wilderness)
Digit Point Campground, NF-9772, Chemult, OR, USIn partnership with the Forest Service, Klamath Trails Alliance will clear fallen logs and clean waterbars (drainage) on the Maidu Lake Trail in the Mnt Thielsen Wilderness. This will be an overnight backpack starting from Digit Point Campground near Chemult, OR. Day trippers are also welcome to join.
THE MEET UP - Digit Point Campground is 83 miles north of Klamath Falls (about 1 hour 45 minutes). Find Google Map Directions HERE. Since it is so far away, there will be OPTIONAL FREE CAMPING FRIDAY night for those that want to come early. Otherwise, meet at the overflow Day Use Parking area at 0900 SATURDAY.
THE PROJECT - Find the Project Map HERE. The Maidu Lake Trail has already been cleared to the Wilderness boundary. We will focus on the approximate 2.75 mile trail to the lake and the .5 mile trail around Lake Maidu.
THE LOGISTICS - Meet on Saturday and hike 3.6 miles to our campsite at Lake Maidu. We will set up camp then start work on the trail around the lake and work back toward the PCT. On Sunday we will break camp and work our way out back to Digit Point Campground.
THE GEAR - This is an overnight self-supported event. Participants must bring and carry thier own gear, food and water. The organizers may have some gear and freeze dried food. Please contact Heather directly if you need something. Everyone will share the weight of tools and equipment (up to an additional 10 pounds). We will be using traditional cross cut saws, hand saws, loppers and digging tools. We will provide the tools, training and safety gear. You provide your own backpack, camping gear, food and water. THE EXPERIENCE NEEDED - No experience is necessary, however participants should be in good physical condition to carry a loaded back pack, bending, lifting and camping in a remote Wilderness environment. Backpacking experience is beneficial.
SUMMARY -
FRIDAY August 28 - Optional Campout at Digit Point Campground
SATURDAY August 29 - Meet at 0900 at Digit Point Campground Day Use Overflow Parking. Hike 3.6 miles to Lake Maidu and start trail work.
SUNDAY August 30 - Depart Camp at 0800 and work our way back to Digit Point Campground by 1700.
DOGS - Well behaved dogs are permitted. Dogs must be on leash in the Campground and stay out of work zones for thier and worker safety.
