What we're about

The KHTA is an Indiana non-profit corporation whose members are dedicated to the completion, preservation, and promotion of the Knobstone Hiking Trail. This footpath follows the Knobstone Escarpment from 30 miles south of Indianapolis to 10 miles north of Louisville, KY. A long-term management organization for the trail assures continuity of assistance in maintaining the trail to the governmental entities whose jurisdictions the trail passes through.

2nd Weekend Work Day Trail Building

Sparksville Park

Would you to spend a day in some beautiful woods with a delightful group of people building a connecting section of Indiana’s premier long distance hiking trail? Come join us as we work on an easement near Sparksville. We meet at the Park at the edge of town. Please bring a lunch and water. We will have large hand tools, but please bring any small tools you have such as clippers or a pruning saw. And a backpack is handy to carry everything in. Instructions will be provided for those who need them. We finish about 3:30. Join us on our website at http://www.knobstonehikingtrail.org/ and on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Knobstone-Hiking-Trail-Association .

Knobstone through hike

Knobstone Trail Southern Terminus

Now that the one day section hikes are over, it's time to start the backpacking trips along the Knobstone and Tecumseh trails. We'll start with the more difficult KT, hoping to hit the trail during the peak foliage for a 3 day trip southbound along the trail. I'm going to suggest each group should meet at the southern terminus just inside Deam Lake SRA (DNR fee or entry permit required), leaving one or 2 cars behind and heading north, leaving caches along the route to Spurgeon Hollow. I've asked another hiker to lead a separate group if enough sign up, and if there's enough interest I can ask others if they'd like to lead a hike, possibly at a slower pace. This is an extremely difficult trail, and everyone joining should be an experienced backpacker for this hike. I'll be hosting more backpacking trips for beginners, I'm hoping to still hike the Tecumseh and Adena Trace before the end of the year. This hike will include days approaching 20 miles a day, and with the hills and carrying gear it'll seem like 40 miles at times! My plan is to hike somewhere past Elk Creek day one, hike past the New Chapel trailhead for day two, and finish on day three.
