We are Hands Up For Hooters, the 3rd largest team in the US walking and fundraising for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day event, based right here in the Sacramento area. Over the next year, we will train to be able to walk 20 miles a day (we're not kidding) for 3 days in a row in the Komen 3-Day in San Diego this coming November. Don't worry, you really CAN do it. We start at 3 miles each day and work up. You will get in shape, you'll meet new positive friends with an "I can do it" attitude, and you will have a group to safely walk with every weekend, while focusing on creating a world without death from breast cancer. We start increasing our miles in May, but til then, we walk only 3 miles every Sunday at 8am rain or shine. We meet at Bella Bru parking lot at 5038 Fair Oaks Blvd at Arden Way. Our name is Hands Up For Hooters and you can read about us (or join our team) at www.HandsUpForHooters.com.
Over the last 4 years our team has raised over $640,000 for Komen, to help bring an end to death from breast cancer.
Read what a recent MeetUp walker had to say about our group:
"I started the new year looking for a local walking group to join through Meetup. Not only did I find one, I ended up finding so much more.
Right from the start on my first day I met the most welcoming and inspiring women. I was immediately greeted by the group's enthusiastic leader, Sally Dunbar, and I received a lovely and warm welcome by all those attending that day. This is a group who wants to stay active by walking.
One of the things I found amazing is that we all share a connection for being there. Whether it's a personal one because you yourself have been affected by breast cancer, or you know someone who has, or whether you are simply looking for a group of nice, friendly people to walk with to help you stay active.
You can walk at your own pace or with a group, some members have a faster pace than others. It doesn't matter what your speed is, do what's right for you. Conversations will flow and afterwards we stay for coffee and or breakfast at Bella Bru. This group truly does have an interest in getting to know each other. As we share stories, friendships form and connections are made.
This is a walking group for both men and women, mostly women. I encourage anyone looking for a walking group to give this group a try and if you want to challenge yourself to participate later this year in the 3-Day, 20 miles a day Susan G. Komen walk, that would be wonderful too. Whatever your reason is for wanting to join, all will be welcomed."
