I just turned on our Mailing List for you to send out emails to the entire group

Dear members,

The Mailing List of this group has been turned off by me for a quite some time - almost 4 years!

Turning it back on has been on my agenda for such a long time.

There were some good reasons for shutting down - and you can read on if you like - but luckily I feel strong and confident enough now to believe that I have overcome several issues. Now it's time to turn it back!))

So... if you'd like to send out messages to the entire group like I always do, please follow the instruction below and use it wisely to create more fun and joy in your life.

Enjoy!

Sally

=======================

This is how you do it:

1. Mailing List address

Every Meetup Group is assigned a unique email address. The address for this group is:

[address removed]

You can also see this address on Mailing List Archive. If you forgot the above address, this is how you retrieve:

On the Navigation Bar (second top bar underneath the group name), there's a button called "Discussion." Click and you see two buttons on drop-down list: "Message Board"  and "Mailing List". Click on "Mailing List” then it will show "Mailing List Archive" with this on top:

Email the mailing list at [address removed]

(This wasn't there before I turned on the Mailing List.)

2. How to send an email to the entire group

If you want to email to the entire group (more precisely, all 590 members who have chosen to receive emails from the group), copy the above address and go to your own email provider (Gmail, AOL, Hotmail, Outlook, etc - whatever you use to log on to Meetup.com site) and paste the address in a new mail you compose and start writing like a regular email. When you're done, review and check for spelling and accuracy of whatever information you're trying to share, etc. and send.

3. "Moderated" Mailing List Setting by me, Organizer

I have set up the Mailing List so that all the outgoing emails first come to me to be approved by me (it's called Moderated setting: messages sent to the Mailing List must be reviewed and approved or declined by the Organizer before being sent).

Yes, it's a little annoying, Sally being a control freak again lol  But this gives you a chance to contact me right away when you discovered something wrong with your message after you hit Send button and want to revise or delete it before it's being sent out to the entire group. It also gives me a chance to screen messages which are not appropriate.

My virtual assistant that I created to do various tasks and check settings from a member's side is Gina4Sal and this is an example notification email she received from Meetup.com after she sent a test email to the mailing list address. I created this virtual profile just for the purpose of checking things from regular member's standpoint, so please do not copy and make fake profiles. I will not approve anyway.

"Gina4Sal,

Please confirm that you want to send the message below to all 590 members of the L.A. Cooking, Recipes, Dining (and French) Meetup Group Mailing List ([address removed]) by clicking the link below.

(When you hit 'Reply' to a Mailing List message, it is sent to everyone on the list. Some people don't realize this, so we're just making sure!)

Do you want this message to be sent to everyone on the
Mailing List?

Yes, please send my message to the entire mailing list

No, please don't send my message

Please note: If you do nothing, your message will NOT be sent.

Best regards,

Here is the full text of your email:

Subject: How can email to the group?

I saw this message but it doesn't seem to work... http://www.meetup.com/LACookingRecipesDiningandFrench/messages/boards/thread/20516022

+++++++++++++++++++++++

(Well, the email says it will be sent to the group, but first the organizer need to approve it.)

Once I approve your email, then it's sent out to the entire group and shows your email address.  The sent email is stored under "Mailing List Archive."

I may decline emails that are not appropriate or only for solicitation purpose.

4. How to RECEIVE emails sent by members using Mailing List

It depends on your setting on how you receive emails from each meetup group. Please go to the group homepage and click "Members" tab in the top navigation bar underneath the group page. Click "Edit communications Setting" and check appropriate boxes.

THIS IS HOW YOU CAN ALSO UNSUBSCRIBE YOURSELF FROM THE MAILING LIST AND MESSAGE BOARD AS WELL AS EMAILS FROM ORGANIZERS AND MEETUP.COM WITHOUT LEAVING THE GROUP.

5. How to REPLY to the emails sent by other members

You can respond to other member's email by just replying to it like a normal email, but the replies also come to me first. If there are too many replies, I might limit the number of reply or delay the delivery.

....OK, that's about it for now. This is a great tool that you can use to better communicate with other members within the group. I noticed Jesses' message asking for French textbooks:

http://www.meetup.com....

Jesse, would you like to re-send the message?))

Have fun!

Sally

Many things have happened since I took over the group in Dec 2007. Shutting down the mailing list for members' use was one of them. Due to my own misbehavior - after becoming the organizer I got so carried away and members got inundated by my emails. Or, I got threatening messages from members and non-members saying "JAP go home" etc. Some even threatened to sue me for poorly organizing the group. Yes, people come up with all kinds of things to say.

However, I've been so fortunate to be surrounded by many, many kind-hearted, strong and smart people who have supported me tremendously. I express my sincere gratitude again to those of you who have been always there for me.

Here I am, feeling much more confident, not only about myself, but also the future of the group. Hope the mailing list will create more communications among members.

Like this photo of a mallard my friend got me, I'll always enjoy swimming happily creating ripples while under the water with my webtoes I kick away predators.))
