eLeCTRONiC WeAraBLes -Part Duex- Jan 19

this is a revised page for the old electonic wearables meetup cuz I can't force a date or details on the old one. Marvelous Matt Pinner has agreed to lead a play date at a local hackerpsace "Crashspace" on Jan 19, 2013

We'll have a pretty open format...

1. Bring something to share: ideas, projects, toys, problems, snacks, friends?

2. Discuss next steps for where we want to take the group and the discussions.

3. A quick demo of EL Wire soldering... for those that want it.

4. Q&A..

Hint: This is taking place on the anniversary of this wonderful wearable electronics roundup from last year: http://blog.makezine.com/2012/01/19/epic-soft-circuit-roundup/

It is FREEEEE. However... CRASHSpace is entirely membership/donation funded (restate is expensive). The community relies on your support to keep the doors open. Donations are welcomed, helpful, and necessary. thx!

Wasn't sure where the best place to put this was...but some people who attended this meet up may be interested inn the wearable electronics workshop that LA Makerspace is hosting https://www.facebook.com/events/436116679804744/ Note that it's not associated with LA Robotics and you have to buy tickets for the event.

I wanted to share the Sparkfun solution for EL wire. I believe the wire sold is 3 m in lenth and is very thin. I LOVE the combined battery/inverter solution, and it comes at a nice price. I did a little video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZgvoZfWcUWM
    * You just need the wire and the combo battery/inverter pack... and batteries

Hey Matt, Syuzi, I went back to work on my lilypad twinkle using Matt's suggestion of terminating the thread away from the board terminal points. I decided to add one LED at a time. first one worked, but when I added the second, it worked but the first one didn't. Got any hints? I'm wondering if the 3V battery wasn't sufficient for the circuit? I put it on video...

I wanted to give special thanks to Matt organizing this. Lots of cool things to look into, was great to catch up with Annika and Sireesh, meet the Crashspace people, and all the rest of the folk there! :)

This meetup was so inspiring. Matt is definitely very organized and explained each project well. The Illuminode project was also very fascinating, as well as the Epson glasses. Can't wait for the next class.

What exactly are you looking for. I have just made up kits of Ultra Bright 5mm LEDs and resistors for $5.00. They are 10 of each, Red, White, Blue, Green and White. The RGBs are also UltraBright and 5MM. Kit of 10 with resistors for $5.00.

It's great that this meetup is finally happening, but, can the venue stand 67 attendees?

    January 17, 2013

    • matt p.

67 is likely too many for the main room at crash. we'll make it work. somehow. perhaps we'll subdivide about the space sorta barcamp style. other venues available? i'm hesitant about a last minute change and it would cost me.

      January 18, 2013

    • crablouis

Barcamp brainstorm and subsequent bofs or the like, interesting idea. It's looking like I may have to bail, anyway. So that would be one less. Too bad, I was looking forward to this.

I am just starting out with adruino but I was interested in making something that would light up and say pulse to music.I wasn't really sure what materials I would need to make something like that I saw the lilypad arduino on sparkfun and was thinking that is what I would use. Will there be people who can help a beginner get started on a project at the meetup :)

    January 16, 2013

    • matt p.

We're filthy with Arduinos. There are specific Arduino classes cropping up all over town, but there may be other ways of getting what you want. Definitely bring it up and I'm sure we'll be able to lead you in a few of the right directions.

If you are coming by on Saturday, you might consider bringing by some books to donate to our little free library: https://blog.crashspace.org/2012/06/crashlibrary/

    gotcha. See you on Sat.

I hope your projects are finishing up nicely. This is going to be fun. We've confirmed a rep from Epson will demo some new AR glasses and the author/editor of FashioningTech will be in the house...
