Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence and the Semantic Web

Details

Imagine if computers could learn like humans. How would this transform the Internet? Artificial intelligence has been long on promises and short on benefits for more than 50 years. Similarly, the semantic web has been touted for more than a decade – yet has generated paltry results.

Until now...

Recent advances in machine learning technologies now make it possible for developers to build intelligence into almost any application. Tools offered by ai-one enable machines to detect the inherent semantic value of any text – including short texts like Tweets – with autonomic detection of keywords and associations.

This presentation provides an overview of ai-one’s autonomic machine learning technology with use case examples from applications that are used by national defense, pharmaceutical, social media and other “real world” customers.

The goal of this presentation is to inspire attendees to use machine learning as a way to create new approaches to developing the semantic web. Key features of ai-one’s technology include: autonomic generation of lightweight ontologies, use of unstructured text as an ontology and data- and language-agnosticism.

About the speaker:

http://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/5/5/7/a/event_137901882.jpegOlin Hyde, Vice President of Brainstorming, ai-one (http://www.ai-one.com/)

Olin is currently responsible for customer and product development at a leading artificial intelligence technology provider, ai-one, (http://www.ai-one.com/) which bought his company, Auto-Semantics, in July 2011.

Olin is a seasoned business development executive and eight-time entrepreneur. He wrote his first computer program at age 12 on an 8-byte homemade computer and has been into technology ever since. His previous positions include: Founder and CEO of Englue Inc., founder and CEO of CrowdBlaze.com, Interim-CEO of VerifyFast (http://www.verifyfast.com/), founder and CEO of American Bankcard Capital, and co-founder and director of National Facilities Group (a real estate information systems provider acquired by Accurent.com). Olin’s employment experience includes leadership positions at Integrant Inc., Andersen Consulting, Koll Real Estate (now CBRE) and self-employment as a project manager specializing in developing requirements for enterprise software and business intelligence systems.

Olin moved to San Diego in 2006 where he serves on the boards of two charities — San Diego Leadership Alliance and Outdoor Outreach. He is an entrepreneur-in-residence with Connect.org (http://www.connect.org/) where he mentors startups in the social media, data analytics and mobile application markets. Olin frequently lectures and blogs on entrepreneurialism, innovation and artificial intelligence.

Olin grew up in Latrobe, Pennsylvania where he was an avid outdoor enthusiast and competitive downhill skier. He has a long-standing interest in promoting STEAM educational programs to disadvantaged youth and helping kids gain self-esteem through outdoor adventures. Olin has traveled to more than 40 countries around the world for work and pleasure. He holds a Bachelor’s of Philosophy in Interdisciplinary Studies from Miami University (Ohio) with a focus in mathematics, marketing and economics. Olin’s hobbies include tinkering with spare parts from broken electronics, painting and suffering through group exercise classes. He was formerly a struggling actor, writer and director in Hollywood – and vows he will never go near the entertainment business again. Olin lives with his fiancée Lydia Rivera and their best friend Fuzz -- who is also one of two office dogs at ai-one.

Applied Semantics was acquired by Google in 2003. Gil has had a lifelong passion for organizing and structuring information, and building smart tools which can make better sense of data. To that end, he set out to develop an open data platform and community in an effort to maximize data accuracy, transparency, and availability. Fellow data lovers -- Tim Chklovski, chief scientist & founding engineer, Eva Ho, an ex-Googler, along with Bill Michels, former GM of Yahoo BOSS, have joined him in this ambitious project.
