What we're about

UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE, all attendees at indoor LAWS events are required to be vaccinated and should expect to wear a mask unless eating!!

Formed in June 2006, LAWS is all about people who happen to be women! We meet to talk, laugh, exchange ideas and enjoy various social activities. We hope you will join us as well as our affiliated group LAWS WALKS where we list our walking events. You will find LAWS WALKS here: https://walkers.meetup.com/684/

You need not be a member of LAWS to join LAWS WALKS and vice versa but, of course, we'd love to see you in both groups. The only prerequisite for joining LAWS is posting your picture on our site. If for some reason, that's a problem for you (or you don't know how), email me and we'll work it out.

Join us!

[LAWS] Book discussion 'Memorial Drive'

Online event

In honor of African American month, i picked a book by an African American author. Natasha Trethewey, twice national American poet laureate, wrote this memoir to work through her mother's murder by her stepfather when she was 19. In that, she told the story of her childhood, growing up in Mississippi and Georgia in the late 60's and 70's.

It is a short book. Reviews either love it or hate it. It is not a conventional book but it touches a lot of relevant topics of today.

[LAWS] Book discussion - 'The Island of Missing Trees' by Elif Shafak

I don't believe I have read a book by a Turkish author so here we are ! When I was looking into this book, I found this quote by her, “In real life,” she writes, “stories come to us not in their entirety but in bits and pieces, broken segments and partial echoes, a full sentence here, a fragment there, a clue hidden in between. In life, unlike in books, we have to weave our stories out of threads as fine as the gossamer veins that run through a butterfly’s wings.”

Here is a link to an NPR interview with the author.
