Network programmability 101 with practical examples

There is significant effort in the industry to make networking equipment easier to install and use, and a large part of the focus is introducing and improving programmability for networking devices – especially for machine to machine interactions and interfaces. Although there is still the need for old-style command-line interfaces and SNMP, the industry is converging on NETCONF/Yang for management.

The Yang data models are not necessarily human-readable friendly, but they do make automation and programmability easier. In the end these enhancements and interfaces should make the entire systems easier to use and monitor. Some programming skills are useful though...

Gene Clendon is a Technical Leader working for Cisco Systems, developing software for their various routers and switches for the last 18 years. He has worked in the communications industry, primarily as a software development engineer (but also dabbled in hardware in the early years), for 27yrs. Gene will be introducing network device programmability, covering such topics as Netconf-Yang and using related tools and examples to show how to program, retrieve, and monitor (primarily Cisco) network devices at this meetup.
