Exploring IEEE 802, Ethernet

Details
This lecture presents an overview of IEEE 802 networks while focusing on the 802.3 Ethernet protocol as the wired connectivity method of choice for communication networks.
Ethernet is examined from a perspective of the 7 universal questions including who, what where, when, why, how, and how much. The protocol is broken down into its constituent fields and explanations of what they are for, and how they work. Ethernet options including transmission media, power over Ethernet, VLANs, auto-negotiation, service discovery protocols, and precision timing will be discussed.
The presentation also shows how Ethernet fits into the international layered network reference model and emerging technologies just coming into use as networking expands its global reach with billions of devices coming on line in the next few years.
Speaker Bio:
George A. Sullivan is a Senior IEEE Member and an Adjunct Professor at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering.
His career at Northrop Grumman (NGC) started in 1981 and culminated in his nomination and acceptance as a Technical Fellow in 2002. He retired from NGC in 2015.
George was the lead network architect for NGC with more than 35 years’ experience in network architecture and engineering. His major responsibility was the NGGN, NGC’s global enterprise network. He was involved with all aspects including strategy, analysis, planning, development, design, security, and operational support of data, voice, and video networks.
His technical interests include high availability networking, network architecture, data center network design, network security, and network management.
Attention Professional Engineers: An application for .2 CEU credits has been applied for and has been approved. There will be a $10 charge for these credits.
6:30 PM: Network with others over delicious food and soft drinks. We will be having deli heroes: American, Italian, and Grilled Vegetables plus coleslaw, macaroni and potato salads. So, bring your appetite.
7:00 PM: Introductions, LICN announcements and presentation
Between our normal non-Meetup crowd and those on this Meetup list, we expect to have a good 40 or so people attending, so bring your business cards to share when networking.
More info about the LICN can be found at www.licn.org. Read our blog at licn.typepad.com.
