On Friday, join us online at Finchley Film Makers (FFM) for an evening dedicated to a work in progress. Director Gavin Foden discusses his documentary ‘Post Traumatic Growth’ (working title), which follows the adventures of a former soldier, Mark, as he explores not only the mountains of wildest Scotland but also the mountains of a mind traumatised by a life-changing event that occurred in Iraq in 2007.

Mark shares thoughtful and candid insight, offering a timely and refreshing counterpoint to the doom and gloom that too often dominates mental health narratives. Rather than be a victim of his PTSD diagnosis, Mark tips conventional wisdom on its head, viewing trauma as an opportunity, turning victim-identity into empowerment and shaping a new language and approach that focuses wholeheartedly on Post Traumatic Growth.

The film is entering the final drafts of editing and Gavin and Mark are hoping the film will be completed before the new year. The aim is to screen the 30-minute film at festivals and potential events that promote mental health awareness.

The evening will cover:

  • concept: finding the idea and approach,
  • rationale behind location and timing of filming,
  • funding and support,
  • approaching a difficult subject and film’s message,
  • equipment and production,
  • editing process,
  • lessons learned,
  • Q&A.
