This February learn about the #RankedChoiceVoting method (also called “Instant Runoff”) with Nick Cote and Charles Lyons of FairVote Virginia (www.fairvotevirginia.org). Cities and states across the country are adopting this method because it lets voters show how they really feel about the options. No more worries about "wasting" your vote on an unpopular pick or "spoiling" the election by voting your conscience. This simple change to how we vote can help reduce gridlock, promote clean campaigning, and encourage higher turnout because every ballot really counts. Virginia has ranked choice voting legislation coming to Richmond again in 2020, and FairVote Virginia will work hard to see it through. So join us at our monthly #HappyHour with guest speakers on wide ranging topics. Meet and mingle with fellow #libertarians, as well as other leaders, activists, and experts while enjoying a wide variety of Belgian-inspired food, beer, wine, and other drinks in Old Town #AlexandriaVA. Join fellow Libertarians as we clean up trash from our communities around Northern Virginia, starting in Vienna. Help keep our neighborhood roads clean and beautiful. This is the the evolution of our earlier trash cleanup of the National Mall during the government shutdown, which received national media attention! Now we take our efforts local (even hyper-local) throughout the entire year, not just when the federal government isn't funded. The Libertarian Party of Northern Virginia has adopted our first (but certainly not our last!) neighborhood road as part of a national Libertarian Party effort called #RiseUpCleanUp to show that Libertarians mean what we say about voluntary effort overcoming all problems. We will meet and start at the corner of Cottage St and Gallows Rd in Vienna, just a 7 minute walk north from the Dunn Loring-Merrifield Metro station (Orange line). https://goo.gl/maps/iN4VcGKmqb82 (If you're driving, it may be best to park at the Metro station, but there is also some neighborhood street parking - just be careful of parking permits and limits) After cleaning up the short eastern segment, we will continue west along Cottage St. There will be opportunities for people to turn back early if they can only stay out for part of the time.
Join the Libertarian Party of Northern Virginia for a special board meeting as it approves major budget expenditures, reviews our financial standing, and conducts regular business including planning for upcoming events, online outreach, and political campaigns. When: Sunday, 23rd of February. Arrive at 11am to settle in. Business starts promptly at 11:30am and will likely go until 1:30pm. Where: Apartment of Chair Adam Theo • 900 N Randolph St, Arlington VA 22203 (1 block from Ballston Metro station – https://maps.app.goo.gl/q5yvPBNcriFEW6UP9 • Phone (and text): [masked] 1 block / 4 minute walk southeast of the Ballston station on the Orange or Silver line. There is street parking in the area, and an inexpensive public parking garage 2 blocks away at the Ballston Quarter shopping mall. If you have any items you want us to address, sending it along to us no later than the day before the meeting for inclusion into our agenda is greatly appreciated. Our meetings often take every available minute, so proper notice is key to using our time effectively. Message the Chair with your item for discussion ([masked]).
The Libertarian Party of Northern Virginia has adopted our first neighborhood park as part of our #RiseUpCleanUp effort to show that Libertarians mean what we say about voluntary action overcoming all problems. Join fellow Libertarians as we clean up and improve our communities around Arlington and the rest of Northern Virginia. Help keep our neighborhood parks clean and beautiful. There are a large number of improvements we will be taking on for this park, including removing and replacing a long fence, removing and replacing park benches as park of a larger landscaping, laying down mulch to protect tree roots, weeding, spreading top soil and seed to repair brown patches, and improving the gravel walkways, among others. LOCATION: Herselle Milliken Park, located at 820 N Lincoln St, Arlington, VA 22201. It's just a 4 minute walk from the Virginia Square-GMU metro station (Orange and Silver line). https://goo.gl/maps/DDeNnC7ketgyihcc9 If you're driving, there is some street parking around the residential neighborhood, but be careful of parking permits. Parking is free on the weekends when we have the events. EQUIPMENT: We'll have garbage bags, shovels, and other tools, but you can bring your own if you're more comfortable with them. You must bring a pair of garden or work gloves (the cheap kind for $2-3 at grocery or convenience stores is fine). You should also bring water (one or two pints should be plenty), bug spray, and sunscreen (even cloudy days can burn and dry out skin).
