TALKS

Beyond Rational Energy Market by Abhigyan Singh
The talk will report on ‘Beyond Rational Energy Market,’ an interactive visualization that served multiple purposes and diverse roles in an anthropology-through-design (AtD) study. The AtD study explored how various sociocultural factors shape people’s choices when they are given control to exchange locally produced renewable energy within their neighborhoods. The interactive visualization showcases ethnographic data collected for 11 months, comprising of around 1200 energy exchanges between 27 energy-receiving households and one energy-giving household in rural India. The visualization was exhibited at Mind-the-Step exhibition at Dutch Design Week 2017.

UX research into low-literacy by Sophie Boonen
Trying out a new recipe or planning a journey with public transport are things many of us take for granted. But this is not the case for the 2,5 million people in the Netherlands who struggle with reading and writing. Low-literacy forms an obstacle to their everyday activities and can lead to greater problems such as poor health and poverty. In order to reach these people and improve their lives, we have to get a deep understanding of their daily reality. But how can we get a real understanding of low-literacy, when reading and writing is so normal to us? In this talk I will share our research into this topic and explain how we tackled this difficult challenge.
