Diary Studies - Uncovering the Strange Rituals of NFL Fans, by Krispian Emert

Details

What's the best way to understand how a target audience behaves over time? Contextual inquiry/ethnographic studies might be too time-consuming or expensive, and phone interviews might not provide insights about context or environment.

In a project Krispian completed for Microsoft, diary studies proved to be a low cost way to gain insight into the context, behaviours and motivations of NFL Fans over a week-long period leading up to the Super Bowl.

She will share anecdotes about this interesting "tribe" of people while she dives into best practices she learned conducting diary studies around the world, including

How to:

• Recruit and incentivize a diary study

• Structure the study to gain "big picture" as well as minutiae of the user's life.

• Make self-reporting fun for the user as well as accurate for you.

• Ensure users thoroughly and completely fill out diaries.
