In the lands of Erlang: Elixir, OTP and Phoenix web framework
Details
After one year we return back to the lands of Erlang. A language and platform for writing concurrent, fault tolerant and scalable software. This time we will learn about Elixir (http://elixir-lang.org/), new language for BEAM VM (Erlang VM) and Phoenix web framework (http://www.phoenixframework.org/).
We have two short talks on the topic:
Vasilis Spilka: Elixir and OTP, a first look.
Michal Horčic: Introduction to Phoenix framework and example of real app
The meetup is prepared together with prag.ex (https://www.meetup.com/prag-ex-Elixir-Erlang-Prague/), Elixir & Erlang in Prague meetup.
Elixir and OTP, a first look
An introduction to the Elixir language, syntax, types, ecosystem, and current state. A brief look to concepts in the Erlang Virtual Machine (Beam). Some live coding examples showing basic Elixir/OTP practices if time.
Introduction to Phoenix framework and example of real app
Quick introduction to Phoenix ( Elixir’s framework for creating web application). Walkthrough existing application (not simple tutorial one, but not overcomplicated either), discussing interesting approaches Phoenix decided to take, discussing my challenges and pleasant surprises coming from Rails development.
Vasilis Spilka works in Applifting as a Ruby/Javascript programmer. About a year ago he became interested in functional programming and decided to go with Elixir. Functional programming made him rethink his practices and gave him a newfound interest in programming.
Michal Horčic is former project manager in small webshop, who decided to get his hands dirty with programming three years ago and doesn’t regret it for a minute. So far all his serious work was done in Ruby and Ruby on Rails framework. Last six months he is getting into functional programming with Elixir.
LocusWorkspace will be open from 6:45PM. The talks starts at 7PM sharp.
