What we're about
We are a support group for unschooling families in the Las Vegas/Henderson valley and surrounding communities.
Please read this before joining.
IMPORTANT: PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT TO JOIN THIS GROUP IF YOUR SOLE PURPOSE FOR DOING SO IS TO ADVERTISE A BUSINESS OR ASK FOR INTERVIEWS FOR THE MEDIA. THIS IS AN UNSCHOOLING SUPPORT GROUP FOR UNSCHOOLING AND HOMESCHOOLING FAMILIES.
What is unschooling?
Unschoolers allow their children to live and learn freely by following their passions. Unschooling is trusting in a child's innate curiosity to learn about the world they live in. Unschooling is trusting that a child will learn everything they need to know simply by living a rich and interesting life. Sometimes unschooling can become a way of life as well as a method of homeschooling.
Read more about what unschooling is here (http://sandradodd.com/unschool/definition.html). (Continue perusing there to read even more about unschooling. Also here (http://joyfullyrejoycing.com/).)
Now a bit about what unschooling isn't.
All unschooling is homeschooling, but not all homeschooling is unschooling. Online charter schools and pre-packaged curriculums are not unschooling. Unschooling is not a part-time endeavor. Unschooling on the weekends, or during the summer, or for everything but math (or whatever other subject) is not possible. Eclectic homeschooling, relaxed homeschooling, and unit studies are not unschooling.
Unschooling is not hands-off. It's not about waiting around for your child to express an interest in something. Unschooling parents provide a rich and interesting environment. They facilitate current interests and try to cultivate new ones. They just don't force. An uninterested child is not a learning child.
All that said, Las Vegas Life Learners is open to families who are not yet unschooling. If you want to learn more about it from people who are doing it to find out if it's right for your family, you are welcome to join. If you are moving toward unschooling, but aren't quite there, you are welcome to join. Moving into unschooling can sometimes be a difficult journey. It requires constant thought and mindfulness, and being surrounded by people who are on the same journey can be enormously helpful. The purpose of this group is not just to get our children together and form friendships but for the adults to find support in learning about and living an unschooling lifestyle.
Park Days and Principles
Our group has park days every Wednesday at various venues around the valley. In the summer when it's meltingly hot we always meet at a park with a water feature and sometimes alternate with evening park playtimes, pools, or indoor places. The biggest value this group has to offer is face-to-face interactions, for both the kids and the adults, so active and frequent participation is encouraged. Kids make friends better with people they see often. Adults too!
There are some principles we'd like everyone to abide by during our gatherings. The first is respect. Not just among the adults, but toward our children. When it comes to unschooling, respectful parenting is extremely important. Disrespectful parenting (spanking, shaming, etc.) has no place at our gatherings and will not be supported.
Secondly, we are not hands-off parents. We expect you to help your child with such things as navigating the sometimes confusing world of social relationships, how to act in public places, and respecting others' and public property.
If all of this sounds like a group you'd like to join, we'd love to have you! Please join us!
