Details

Freelancing in Shanghai is an exciting way but it comes with challenges... Coders, Designers, even Agencies could all use some meaningful connections and practical tips to get going!

Join Le Wagon in a unique night of learning. In this edition, we will discuss how to take full advantage of our ultra-connected world to work wherever suits Freelancers. At the moment, "nomadism" is still a monir trend but the phenomenon is nevertheless well and truly underway.

Speaker 1

Michaeljohn Clement: Software Develper. Michaeljohn acquired deep experience with front-end technologies, especially JavaScript, during his years as a freelance Web developer, and was an early contributor to Node.js. He has worked with startups and small companies all over the world. He moved from the US to China in 2011 and believes many of the biggest opportunities for tech startups are found in the Middle Kingdom. As a teacher, Michaeljohn advocates learning by doing, and LeWagon's program is a great way for students to put theory immediately into practice.

Under the topic “digital nomadism”, Michaeljohn’s talk will center around how to develop and demonstrate mastery as a freelance developer. He will introduce the concept of mastery as it applies to software professionals. This is lens through which we can better understand trends in the industry we work in, choose which technologies to adopt or avoid, and even find people to work with and have our skills recognized. As software professionals, we produce something almost intangible, using tools that most of our clients have never seen and writing languages that people literally refer to as a “code”. We may spend years mastering our tools, but we cannot demonstrate that mastery to anyone outside our field.

Is mastery even something that can be measured? Is the “10x engineer” a myth or something achievable? How can we attain mastery in a field that is constantly changing?

In this talk he will introduce a specific practice that he uses to address these questions. There should be useful takeaways for any software developer or anyone who markets themselves as a solo freelancer doing digital work.

Speaker 2

Vlad: Design Strategist. Combining strategic thinking with interdisciplinary design approach to create meaningful experiences that connect with people.

Vlad is going to bring the “designer perspective” to the notion of digital nomadism. Awesome and appealing it might sound, freelancing and remote work can affect career development in the long run. Through his witty analogies, Vlad will debunk “digital nomadism” by revealing that it is a rather sad reality of globalization rather than a “paradise” people fantasize as.

Speaker 3

Simonie: Product & Interaction designer. Researching future relationships between people and emerging technologies anddesigning digital, physical and behavioral interfaces.

Simonie will talk about the good, the bad and the ugly of being a design nomad based onhis experience, as well as the role of cultural clashes in this lifestyle. He will also introduce some obscure theories about it.
