Successful Distributed (Agile) Teams with Johanna Rothman and Mark Kilby

Location visible to members

Happy New Year to you and your families! We are so glad to have Johanna Rothman and Mark Kilby as the Guest Speakers for our first Meetup in 2021! //// Eight Principles for Successful Distributed (Agile) Teams //// You’ve been working as a dispersed team for several months. You might not have experienced the best work of your life. Many dispersed teams feel that they make uneven progress, or that someone else already did the work you thought was yours, or that the people you enjoyed at the office are not the same people. Distributed teams encounter these problems—and more—all the time. Instead of trying to “transfer” the in-the-office experience to remote, use the eight principles of successful distributed teams to create a better project with better outcomes. Join Johanna Rothman and Mark Kilby for an exploration of the eight principles for any distributed team, based on their book "From Chaos to Successful Distributed Agile Teams". You can improve how your team works, based on applying these principles. You don’t have to use agile approaches to use these principles—although you might see you have more resilience and adaptability when you do! The principles: • Establish acceptable hours of overlap. • Create transparency at all levels. • Create a culture of continuous improvement with experiments. • Practice pervasive communication at all levels. • Create a project rhythm. • Assume good intention. • Create a culture of resilience. • Default to collaborative work. Johanna Rothman’s bio: Johanna Rothman, known as the “Pragmatic Manager,” offers frank advice for your tough problems. She helps leaders and teams do reasonable things that work. Equipped with that knowledge, they can then decide how to adapt their product development. Find her newsletter, books, blogs, and more at jrothman.com and createadaptablelife.com. Mark Kilby’s bio: With decades of remote agile experience and an easy-going style, Mark Kilby supports teams as they learn to collaborate and discover their path to success. He works at every level inside and outside the organization-with teams, leaders, and with distributed professional communities. See markkilby.com for information about his books, newsletter, and articles.

Business Agility, Agile Culture, and Open Space Agility: A New Series

Location visible to members

With increasing awareness and activity in the areas of Business Agility, Agile Culture, and Open Space Agility, let's dedicate a series of Meetups to explore these topics - including Guest Speakers from organizations who went thru or going thru Agile Transformations beyond software teams. Michael Herman, Jill Perkins, and I recently attended the EBAS Training in Omaha. If there is enough interest, we plan to give a mini version of the "Enterprise Business Agility Strategy overview". IMPORTANT: Due to conflicts with other Agile Meetups in Chicago area, we are moving from 4th Monday to 1st Monday of the Month. Hope this works well for all. Huge Thanks to Ted Squires for coordinating with other Meetup Organizers on this. We can discuss this further on Oct 1.
