He received his PhD at the University of Massachusetts Lowell in 2011 and is a member of the adjunct faculty at the University of South Florida. He has over 35 years of experience in networks and security; having personally been involved in the design and development of 3 firewalls, the AltaVista, Raptor, and Symantec Gateway Security Firewall. In addition, he worked on a number of other security related technologies, to include the developed of a version of Norton Antivirus for the DOD SME/PED (Small Mobile Environment / Portable Electronic Device) which was originally used by presidents and other government officials for secure electronic communications. He has also developed advance filtering and detection techniques for Symantec’s Data Loss Protection product, a DOD secure file reputation system, and a product called Symantec Insight for Malware Researchers (a malware analysis tool). Bill has been issued 21 patents on security related technologies to include “Firewall Relational Rule Modeling for Fast Path Stream Processing” and “Unified Threat Management Antivirus Scanning using TCP Stream Trickling”, just to name a few. Bill is highly involved in Cyber Threat Information Sharing (CTIS), for which he was a member of a group that defined the protocols and language (STIX/TAXII) used by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to allow government and industries to share cyber threat intelligence. The results of this initiative was the integration of this technology into “DeepSight”, a Symantec portal used for malware analysis sampling. Directions:
