Learn to Code - An Introduction: Part 2

Surrey Libraries - City Centre Library

The second part to the introductory learn-to-code workshop where participants will learn: - Recap of Python basics and data types - Recap of APIs - Into to code flow control (e.g. if/else statements, loops) - Reading and writing CSV/Excel files using Python - Intro to Data Science using Python's 'SciPy' library (time permitting) **Bringing your laptop, if you have one, is strongly recommended to get the most out of this workshop** This workshop will be run in Room 402 @ City Centre Library. The room will be open at 6pm with the workshop starting at 6:30pm sharp. Hope to see you there!

Build a Web App from Scratch - Part 1

This workshop series is intended for beginner/novice coders who are interested in getting into the details of building standalone web applications. The series will require roughly 10 hours total over a month and has a small fee of $20/workshop (~$100 for the series). **You will need to bring your laptop for these workshops** Note - this is not an introductory level workshop as you are expected to have some basic experience with coding (see the 'Learn to Code - An Introduction' series for the intro level). In this series, you will learn to build a realtor web application completely from scratch, which will look similar to https://surrey-homes-heatmap.herokuapp.com/ . This will entail: - Setting up a Python web project using Flask (http://flask.pocoo.org/) - Using the Realtor.ca API (https://github.com/Froren/realtorca) - Writing & reading data to a CSV/Excel file - Learning the basics of HTML, CSS and Bootstrap to create the front-end of the web app - Learning to use the Google Maps API, and in particular the heatmap layer - Deploying and running your web application off a remote server using Heroku (https://www.heroku.com/) In Part 1, we will learn to setup a Python web project using Flask and also interact with the Realtor.ca API and filter out key property data. This first workshop will be run in Room 418 @ City Centre Library. The workshop will start at 6pm sharp so that we have the full 2 hours! Hope to see you there!
