Scenario-based learning uses interactive scenarios to support active learning strategies such as problem-based or case-based learning.

It normally involves individuals working their way through a storyline, usually based around an ill-structured or complex problem, which they are required to solve.

In the process individuals must apply their subject knowledge, and critical thinking and problem solving skills in a real-world context. Scenario based learning is often non-linear, and can provide feedback opportunities to individuals, based on the decisions they make at each stage in the process.

We will start by covering the academic theories and then bring the topic to life with real world examples of scenario-based learning in action.

“Design Techniques for Scenario-Based Learning”

I am Head of Learning Technology in Harvest and my role is to partner with our clients to create world-class and leading edge learning experiences for their people. I also work closely with our team of Learning Specialists to drive the use of technology in their programmes.

I have over fifteen years' of experience in Learning and Development. My passion and expertise is in eLearning, social learning, game based learning and project management.

My qualifications include a Master’s Degree in eLearning (MSc.) from Dublin Institute of Technology and a Master’s Degree in Project Management (MBS) from the Smurfit Business School, UCD. I previously lectured with NUI Maynooth in Project Management and I’m a regular platform speaker with the Irish Institute of Training and Development and the Irish Sales Institute.

Barry Ryan - @CBS_Lecturer

Dr. Barry Ryan is an award winning, research active applied biochemist with a proven expertise in practitioner use of alternative research-based pedagogies in a modern higher education setting. His research interests are diverse, but broadly fall into two strands: pedagogical and scientific. These strands are aligned under the overarching theme of research informed STEM education. Dr. Ryan's lab-based research informs and maintains the currency of his undergraduate and postgraduate teaching; whilst pedagogic research ensures the most appropriate approaches to teaching and learning are adopted to support all learners. The current theme of his research is students as producers and co-creators of knowledge.
