Quantified Self: Hand Drawn Data Visualisations

Details

In previous webinars we have discussed different use cases around Quantified Self, this webinar will go one step further and show you some more real world examples on Hand Drawn Data Visualisations, with data that has been manually collected. This webinar features Sophie Sparkes and Andy Kriebel from The Information Lab, but we also have a special guest from Tableau, Taha Ebrahimi.

Agenda:

  1. Getting vizzy on your phone - Sophie Sparkes
Let's face it, for better or for worse most of us have our smartphone within arms length all day. Your phone alarm wakes you up in the morning, and it's often the last thing you look at at night. Statistics show we touch our phones over 50 times a day. So why not use your phone to boost your creativity and scratch your data viz itch? From data collection to visualisation, see how you can use your phone to create 'hand-drawn' (or at least hand-tapped!) data visualisation.

  2. Understanding & Collecting Data by Hand-Drawing - Taha Ebrahimi
Data visualization is just the tip of an iceberg. Not many people understand exactly how much work goes into the simplest viz before it gets to final design—everything from collecting the data, cleaning the data, understanding the data, and figuring out the most useful way to visualize it. Creating the actual data visualization should be the final step in a long journey and, sometimes, hand-sketching and “playing” with your data is the best way to start. Taha Ebrahimi, Director of Tableau Public, will share the process behind one of her latest data drawing projects about local trees to illustrate exactly how messy (and fun!) this can be.

  3. How Drawing Postcards Helped Me Learn About Myself - Andy Kriebel
Tracking data about yourself week by week, you start to pay attention to the little things that are going on around you that you otherwise would probably ignore. In this talk, Andy Kriebel will take you through his Dear Data journey. He'll reveal the most interesting stories found in the data, show how Tableau helped him discover stories and talk about how this project has helped him think more creatively and learn about himself.
