Light Therapy is a non traditional support group that focuses on healing from sexual abuse through activities and community.
Hello, my name is Janis and I started this meetup because I wanted to give abuse survivors - myself included - an alternative to traditional group support. Let me start off by saying that I am firm believer in the power of traditional counseling. It has helped me for many years and I think it is a great tool to have when life gets to be too much and you need help. But I also believe that the word “therapy” is analogous to many different things. Hiking, going to an art exhibit, having a picnic can also be therapeutic - especially when it’s done with like-minded people.
Light was born because I personally believe that when used in conjunction with traditional therapy (i.e., therapists, support groups) you can help aide in the recovery process in a more complete and holistic way. It’s also a good way to have a community of people who understand and empathize without having to say much. Socials, picnics, game and movie nights, theatre and exercise is what Light is about.
Yes, it’s cathartic to sit and talk with other survivors and share stories about our abuse, but sometimes it can be equally cleansing to be with those same people and participate in activities that help us not dwell on the past but focus the present while giving us a greater outlook for the future.
Remember: what was done to us (abuse) was done in the dark and oftentimes in secret. Recovery can only happen in the light.
