What we're about

Before signing up, please fully read this introduction and the Little Brays of Sunshine Volunteer Information (https://www.meetup.com/Little-Brays-of-Sunshine/pages/23128453/Little_Brays_of_Sunshine_Member_Information/) page.

This is not a typical meetup group. We are using the meetup service to help organize our activities. This is a community service group and members are expected to attend training sessions and commit to volunteering their time on a regular basis.

The Little Brays of Sunshine is a community service organization formed in 2012 whose goal is to brighten people's life through engagements with a herd of affectionate, smart, and interesting donkeys. It is a project of Donkey Park, Inc., a 501(c)3 non-profit organization based in Ulster Park, NY.

Most of our focus is on interactions with those leading diminished lives due to physical, mental, or emotional disabilities such as seniors living in skilled nursing or assisted living environments or children in special needs programs. The Little Brays also serve as donkey ambassadors, visiting libraries, mainstream schools and nature and agriculture centers to provide education and a hands-on opportunities to learn about one of man's most valuable domesticated animals. You can visit the Little Brays of Sunshine (https://www.facebook.com/LittleBraysofSunshine) facebook page to view examples of the events in which we have participated.

While it is helpful to have donkey experience, no equine experience is necessary. We will train you. What is necessary is that you have the desire to volunteer your time to make a positive impact on people's lives.

While we have some needs that can be fulfilled remotely and at any time or day (such as media creation or public relations), the primary roles require you to participate in training and handling the donkeys at events, so you need to be able to travel to Donkey Park (in Ulster Park, NY) and be able to attend two to three sessions a month (more if you have time). Also, be aware that MOST of our events are during business hours during the week. If you are only available on weekends, there are still opportunities to be involved, but they are fewer and it is possible to end up on a volunteer wait list.

For those who would like to first become familiar with donkeys and their impact on people, we recommend that you join our partner meetup group, the Hudson Valley Walk with Donkeys (https://www.meetup.com/Hudson-Valley-Donkey-Walkers/) meetup group.
