What we're about
Anyone who loves to dance or the idea of dancing should be Contra dancing at Glen Echo on Friday nights. Always a live band with excellent music, and free dance lessons, and a very friendly dance crowd. Contra dancing is a cross between square dancing, english country dancing and line dancing. There is absolutely no one who can't pick it up at any age, and this is the place to do it.
The Friday Night Dancers meet every week at the Glen Echo Park Spanish Ballroom famous for it's large, historic wooden dance floor. Sometimes we are also in the bumper car pavilion next door. Lessons always start at 7:30 and the dances go from 8:30–11:30.
The meet up group always meets at 7:30 for the lessons in the center of the hallway.
You do not need to bring a partner. Traditional Contra dancing changes partners on all dances. You wear what is comfortable, but if you bring a flowy skirt, it will fan out when you do your turns - great fun. Wear comfortable shoes or even go bare footed. Shoes should not fall off your feet when dancing, and most dancers prefer shoes with leather soles or something that is a bit slippery vs a gripping show sole.
Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for students. There are volunteer opportunities to offset the cost if you wish.
Plan to have fun. Dancing and listening to Contra music will make you happy.
There is a nice cafe next door should you need something to eat.
