What we're about

Join us for IMPROV ONLINE sessions! MON / WEDS / FRI 7pm-9pm

*** Hi Everyone. Due to the Government announcement on 16th March 2020, I will not be running improv drop-in class in person, for the foreseeable. When advice and guidance changes I will review the situation again***

These sessions are for everyone, whether you've done an improv class before or not. They are fun, and release your creativity and imaginations! Improv sessions can relieve stress, anxiety, help boost our mental wellbeing and socially connect us through improv comedy. You don't have to 'be funny', or have any prior experience of improv. What People Say:

"During lockdown, online LCI classes have lifted my spirits and made me feel better about myself, the laughter has been a tonic and I have felt safe and valued."

"It enriches my life and makes me feel like I am growing, not just as a performer, but also as a person. I feel inspired, happy and full of ideas."

"Highlight of my week!"

The benefits of laughter on wellbeing:

“Laughter appears to cause all the opposite effects of stress. Laughter shuts down the release of stress hormones like cortisol. It also triggers the production of feel-good neurochemicals like dopamine, which have all kinds of calming, anti-anxiety benefits.” (Dr. Lee Berk, Assoc. Professor, Loma Linda University, California and Assoc Dean at School of Allied Health Professions.)

I teach improvised comedy workshops every Monday night, upstairs @ The Fly in the Loaf Pub, 13, Hardman Street, L1 9AS. 7-9pm, £7/8.

These 2 hour drop-in workshops are suitable for any level of experience of improv. You don't have to have any experience at all. In fact it's perfect for beginners. The workshops are fun, friendly and supportive, with lots of laughter. Improvised comedy is basically making up short scenes without a script. Improv helps creativity, spontaneity, and free-thinking. It's great for confidence building, mental health and wellbeing. And no - you don't have to 'be funny'! Though there IS lots of laughing! Improv is collaborative and we all have each others back!

These workshops are great for:

People who have NO experience of doing improv or acting.

People who want to try something a bit different.

People who are naturally curious.

People who are open-minded.

Stressed and busy people who want to have a stress-busting laugh in a skilled and structured environment.

Creative people who might be feeling ‘stuck’ or ‘blocked.’

People who have some experience of improv or acting but want to work on their improvisation skills.

People who are experienced in acting or improv but want to keep practicing their skills on a weekly basis.

This is a fully participatory session. The weekly workshops start with ice breaker warm-up games, where playful silliness is encouraged! Then leads into simple, very short improvised scenes, all are well structured so you are never lost for words or on your own. Classic improv favourite games and scenes (similar to Whose Line is it Anyway) are explored.

Come and dip you toe in! You will amaze yourself at what you can do! There isn’t a funnier way to spend your Monday Nights!

This popular improvised comedy workshop has been successfully established since 2015 and suits anyone of any level of improv experience. We regularly have between 15-20 people attend every week. Every new person is welcomed into this friendly and supportive environment. This class is suitable for beginners and beyond. There is no pressure to 'be funny', just being you as you are, is more than enough. You don't need to have any experience of acting, drama, comedy or performance. We have people from all walks of life there. You will laugh for the whole two hours, learn lots, make new friends and connections. Guaranteed! Improvisation means making up short scenes on the fly, without a script. It is a skill-set underpinned by principles and structures, making it learnable and doable for all. In fact, you already know how to improvise, you do it every day, in every conversation you have! Every exercise and scene in the workshop is well structured and spontaneously co-created by you and your scene partners. Improv is a team effort and everyone has a go and has your back! The weekly workshops start with ice breaker warm-up games where the principles of improvisation are explored. These can be boiled down to this: * Listen really well * Adopt a YES mindset, accepting people's ideas * Contribute something back into the scene These principles are usually referred to as Listen / Say Yes / Yes And We then have a go at improvising some scenes. Ideas for scenes are suggested by me and the group and the dialogue is then improvised (just like any conversation you might have). If you remember the TV show Whose Line is it Anyway then you may recognise some of the games! Improvisation improves your sense of wellbeing, self-esteem, self-confidence, and social connection. It is collaborative and creative and sparks lots of ideas. It will enhance your ability to think more spontaneously and have more fun in your life. There is always huge amounts of spontaneous laughter. Evidence shows that laughing produces 'feel good' hormones, so you walk away with a sense of achievement AND feeling good. We always have a drink and a chat after the workshop where new friendships and connections happen! Come and join us. Any questions drop me an email. Workshops are led by Emma Bird, an actor, director, improviser with 12 years experience of performing and teaching improv. Testimonials: “Emma’s class is amazing. She’s a great teacher and a terrific person and everyone is so supportive and friendly. I cannot recommend improv enough. It’s a great laugh, you build your confidence and learn new skills. Making that first step to go is honestly one of the best decisions I’ve made in my entire life” “If you ever fancied trying improv or want something to get you being more creative and having fun at the same time then Liverpool Comedy Improv’s classes are amazing. Fun, a tonic and in many different ways life-changing.” “Thoroughly enjoyable. Was worried it’d be too scary & I’d freeze, but Emma’s facilitation made it fun & non-intimidating. Had a great laugh with a diverse group of people” “It’s a really great way to explore your funny, you can fail and succeed but feel safe to do so! Great way of building confidence and meeting a great variety of people and ideas!” (Please RSVP accurately so I can get a sense of numbers. Many Thanks!)
