What we're about
This meetup is an ongoing discussion about an extraordinary transition that few are prepared for: living and working in an age of longevity and in a VUCA world (a world characterized by volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity). Our lives will be longer than what has historically been the case and the traditional notion of a linear, three stage approach to life - education, followed by work, and then retirement - must be rethought. We need to start thinking now about the decisions we will have to make in order to make the most of this longer life, a life that will see many significant changes. It will require a restructuring of life, moving away from the constraints of three stages to a way of living that is more flexible and more responsive, and one that looks into the future.
We started our journey by reading "The 100 Year Life: Living and Working in an Age of Longevity" by Lynda Gratton and Andrew Scott. The book discussion was very insightful and introduced us to a wide variety of topics related to living and working in an age of longevity and in a VUCA world, such as the future of work, the importance of what the authors call "intangible assets", the need to restructure time from recreation to re-creation, human capacity for change, and more. We'd like to continue the journey by reading more books. So, the structure for this group will more or less stay the same from book to book: we'll prepare for each meeting by reading one to two chapters of the book, and we'll introduce a new book every few months. Please keep in mind that if you do not read the book don't let that stop you from coming to a meeting. The discussions we have at our meetings are really interesting - they will bring you on the journey of reading the book and I am sure you'll enjoy them and learn something.
I hope you'll consider joining this important discussion, which represents a much needed movement in my mind.
