This month's London Accessibility Meetup sees us welcome Ian Hamilton talking about 'Accessibility In Gaming' and Ruby Steel talking about 'Designing for the extreme : Inclusive Design 2.0'
### Accessibility in Gaming - Ian Hamilton
Game development is a huge industry, with great cultural significance and importance to people's lives. It also has a burgeoning interest in accessibility. This talk will give an overview of why accessibility in games is so important, and some of the ways in which it varies from accessibility in other industries.
Ian Hamilton is an accessibility advocate and consultant, with a background in design, UX, and gaming for preschool children with profound and multiple disabilities. He now works with developers, publishers, academia, platforms, middleware & industry bodies, to raise the profile and understanding of accessibility across the games industry.
### Designing for the extreme : Inclusive Design 2.0 - Ruby Steel
What can we learn about designing for all by designing for just one person who is living in an extreme circumstance? Everyone experiences a lack of ability to varying degrees – whether that’s because you’re trying to use your phone one handed whilst carrying a hot coffee and have sunlight glaring in your face or are someone that has a physical disability all the time – making experiences accessible should be on everyone’s agenda. But what is the best way to design inclusively?
Ruby shares learnings from her time on BBCTwo’s Big Life Fix.
Ruby Steel is a Senior Design Strategist at Smart Design, committed to making people’s lives better through the power of design. She works across a variety of industries, with an emphasis on healthcare. She has been awarded two Helen Hamlyn Design Awards for Creativity and Inclusive Design, and received honorable mentions from Core77 and the RSA for design solutions combating issues such as social isolation in older people.
