Apologies for the lateness of your monthly newsletter - Here’s what’s coming up in October:
1/ MEETUPS, EVENTS, SPECIAL NON-RELIGIOUS CELEBRATION DAYS THIS MONTH:
a. Midweek Meetup + talk: Regular Second-Wed-Of-The-Month slot Wed 10th Oct Subject this month = "How far do we/should we go in order to stand up for our views?". Plus a short talk from another secular group. If we have time, we'll also discuss how the NSS rally could be better attended/organised next year. For those that haven't been, do try and come along - it's an easy-going atmosphere and friendly, so no need to be nervous :-)
b. Our Monthly Social Meetup: In the regular Last-Sunday-Of -The-Month slot; 28th October a choice of bowling/karaoke/pool + acoustic music in the pub afterwards
c. No special secular dates of note in October.
Please feel free to add any other notable secular dates/celebrations that we may have missed (This newsletter will be posted on site - just hit 'reply' and add whatever you wish)
2/ CAPTION COMPETITION: It was going to be to guess Steve Lee's occupation (he arrives at the Sunday socials smartly dressed, from work, but also having had quite a few beers ...what kind of job could that be??) But Steve wasn't keen on that idea (!) , so the October comp subject is open for suggestions. Doesn't have to be a caption, could be a competition about anything at all - please put your suggestion on the board!
3/ CAMPAIGNS – You’ll find all our campaigns in 'CAMPAIGNS' sub-forum, many take only 1-5 mins to make your voice count - there are usually one or two new ones every month.
And a quick round-up of last month…
Our Strapline= Peacefully Promoting and Celebrating Reason, Equality and Freedom From Religion: our events in September covered all of that :-)
As well as various outside 3rd Party events, we had our regular two meetups - the midweek discussion event, and our Sunday social - it was also LAAG's first CELEBRATION of Nature and Reason event (Autumn equinox). There was our first CONFERENCE event (NSS), our first official participation in a RALLY event (Rally for a secular Europe), another ACTIVISM event (Stratford), and we're also delighted to be informally collaborating with our friends at CLHG from September, and you'll see shared events on our Events boards.
Other Landmarks - We've reached the 200 mark, thanks to all your support and enthusiasm! Welcome to all NEW LAAGers; great to have your company and we look forward to hearing your views and meeting soon. A couple of new PREMIUM LAAGers have been added as well ...people who consistently add flavour to the LAAGer brew ;-)
1/ Message from Paul Edkins -"Camp Quest UK runs summer camps for free-thinking children aged 9-16. At our camps, children take part in a combination of challenging physical activities and stimulating mental activities. The focus is on sharing opinions freely, critical thinking, and building a community of young free thinkers in a safe, friendly and fun environment.
We have two camps and a party happening this year and we would love to involve some of the members of the LAAG. We need help with logistics, funding, camp workshops, spreading the word to young people and talking to schools about what we do. We would be very grateful if you could offer any of your time!
For more info, please see our website: http://www.camp-quest.org.uk/. Please e-mail Paul ([address removed]) if you would like to get involved." 2/ Message From Gennaro Giannini - "I'm thinking about starting a biotech company (human health related) and I would only want to work with an atheist if I could, so I would like to have a chat with someone who could be part of the project, or could make me notice something that I haven't thought yet".
3/ 20% off tickets for LAAGers and CLHG at the Comedy club that discovered Michael McIntyre, had Jimmy Carr as compere, and hosted Mitchell and Webb (Peep show) for BBC previews. This show is in Ealing (Ealing Broadway overground or district/central line = 15 mins walk, or South Ealing Tube (Piccadilly line) = 5 mins walk). Show details here 18th Oct + has an atheist compere! To reserve tkts at £8, email [address removed] with your name, contact no + no.of tickets, otherwise £10 on the door.
Thanks all, have a great month, and see you soon. (And if you'd like something included in the newsletters about anything at all, or any other thoughts/feedback ...do let us know!)
