Feb 2013 - Continuous Delivery of Greenfield and Legacy Apps - Steve Smith (Sky)

Experience Report + Discussion

Many Continuous Delivery experience reports focus upon the automated release of a single application, but how do you scale a pipeline to manage multiple platforms of greenfield and legacy applications? How do you roll out a pipeline across Development and Operations without cross-functional teams or shared line management?

In this talk Steve Smith (@agilestevesmith, http://www.stephen-smith.co.uk/) will share some of the people and technical challenges encountered while building a pipeline for 60+ applications at Sky Network Services, including the use of the Strangler pattern (http://martinfowler.com/bliki/StranglerApplication.html) and applying autonomation ("automation with a human touch") practices to an organisation.

Come and hear Steve's excellent talk (given recently at XPDay and SkillsMatter) and discuss how we can achieve Continuous Delivery with legacy applications and environments.

For anyone who missed this talk, there is a podcast of a previous version of the same talk given by Steve Smith at SkillsMatter in late 2012:

Thanks to everyone who came! I really enjoyed it, and there were some great questions. From feedback a lot of attendees were interested in the people/change management section, so I'm now talking at Skills Matter on Tue 21 May @ 1830 specifically on that subject. Hope to see you there, or at Chris O' Dell's London CD talk next week! http://bit.ly/ZG39Ff

Excellent talk, some really fascinating ideas about having a build 'interface' that allows legacy build scripts to be wrapped up in a standard way and the business hurdles to increasing release frequency.

Agreed - uniformity of Interface rather than Implementation is an accepted software pattern, but to see it applied at the team/package level was very useful for me.
